Job Purpose
To assist with laboratory courses in subject specialism on the demonstration of lab-specific technical skills. To support teaching through the demonstration of exercises in line with agreed learning outcomes of the course. To support sessions and oversee students carrying out practical exercises. To offer assistance, as appropriate, including the provision of detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.
MainDuties and Responsibilities
1. To assist with laboratory courses in the subject specialism on the demonstration of lab-specific technical skills [both small groups and one-to-one] and to answer questions related to those demonstrations, including the provision of detailed explanations of how the activity relates to the wider area of study.
2. To assist/give guidance, where required, to students who are carrying out practical exercises.
3. To be aware of any health and safety implications, and take action to maintain a safe environment, raising any concerns with the course organiser.
4. To assist students in analysis and interpretation of results.
5. To contribute to the development of teaching material and workbooks.
6. Where required, to assist in marking student tests set by the course organiser using defined marking criteria where marking requires little or no interpretation.
7. Where required, to provide factual feedback to students and the course organiser.
8. Where required, to ensure that equipment, exercise or process is functional and/or material for demonstrations, exercises etc is prepared before the start of a session.
9. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
10. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
11. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.
Knowledge /Qualifications Essential:A1 Postgraduate student with a background in microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or plant science.
A2 Expert knowledge of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or plant science.
Skills Essential:C1 Expertise in basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, bacterial transformation, restriction digests, ligation, gel electrophoresis, etc.).
C2 Strong scientific thinking and writing skills.
ExperienceE1 Experience in performing basic molecular biology and protein techniques in a laboratory environment.
E2 Experience in computing.
DesirableF1 Previous experience in demonstrating during laboratory courses.
Terms and ConditionsSalary will be Grade 5, £28,031 - £31,236 per annum pro rata.
This post is offered on a fractional basis and is fixed term.
