Teacher of Latin and Classical Studies

Teacher of Latin and Classical Studies ST ALOYSIUS’ COLLEGE: THE SCHOOL

St Aloysius’ College is unique. As Scotland’s only Jesuit school, we occupy a unique position at the very heart of the city of Glasgow. Our campus, located adjacent to the Glasgow School of Art and close to the Royal Conservatoire, places the College firmly within the cultural and intellectual life of the city. The College’s iconic green blazer is a familiar and enduring presence, synonymous with both the school and the city itself.

We are proud to be one of the most socially diverse independent schools in Glasgow, educating young people from ages 3 to 18 across Junior and Senior Schools. The College has a proud tradition of academic excellence, with results that consistently place us among the highest performing schools in Scotland. Demand for places remains strong, particularly at key entry points.

Our Campus reflects both our heritage and our ambition. It includes the historic, listed Hanson Building (1859), the award winning Clavius Science Centre and a £8 million sports complex at the very heart of our site.

While deeply rooted in tradition, St Aloysius’ College is forward looking in its mission. Guided by the Jesuit ideal of forming ‘women and men for others,’ we are committed to developing young people of intellect, compassion and integrity for generations to come. As a member of HMC and part of a global Jesuit network educating over 2.5 million students, the College offers exceptional opportunities for professional collaboration, development and international engagement.

St Aloysius’ College is proudly Jesuit and Catholic, and equally proud of the diversity of its community. We warmly welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds who share our commitment to educational excellence and the formation of young people in service of others.

The Classics and Latin Department

Classics is an exceptional department within the College, consistently achieving outstanding results and proving popular with students and parents alike. Latin and Classical Studies are taught to all pupils in S1 and as an option in S2. In S1, the Cambridge Latin Course is used to introduce pupils to the Latin language and life in the ancient Roman world. As they progress into S2, they continue to discover the classical world with a bespoke Latin and Classical Studies course based on the Trojan War and the Adventures of Odysseus.

Both Latin and Classical Studies are popular choices at all certificated levels (National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher), with outstanding examination results. Currently, there is an after school Classical Greek class where pupils have the opportunity to be presented for the Intermediate Certificate in Classical Greek (ICCG). The department is dynamic, innovative and progressive, fostering an atmosphere of achievement, enjoyment and success.
