At Coherent, we leverage expertise across multiple international sites to deliver world‑leading ultrafast laser systems. Our facility in Kaiserslautern, Germany, is a dedicated design centre specialising in the development of very high‑power industrial picosecond (ps) and femtosecond (fs) laser systems, while our Glasgow, Scotland, plant is a combined design and manufacturing facility recognised globally as a Centre of Excellence for ultrafast lasers.

All laser systems designed at Coherent Kaiserslautern are manufactured exclusively at our Glasgow facility. The role of NPI Cross‑Site Engineer (based in Glasgow) is specifically created to facilitate seamless product transfer between Kaiserslautern and Glasgow.

Job Summary

The NPI Cross‑Site Engineer will serve as the technical bridge between design and manufacturing, working closely with both teams throughout product development and providing on‑site support during initial production phases. The position is highly cross‑functional and requires effective collaboration in a fast‑paced international environment; travel and periods abroad are expected.

Primary

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Introduce and transfer new laser products, variations, and changes into manufacturing.
  • Participate in development phases at Kaiserslautern, focusing on prototype builds, design reviews, process and tool definitions, and representing NPI & Manufacturing KPIs.
  • Participate in pilot phases at Glasgow, concentrating on training and supporting laser production operators.
  • Participate in engineering release phases at Glasgow, focusing on Manufacturing KPI improvements (Touch Time, Yield, Cycle Time).
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering and Production departments at Glasgow to streamline and continuously improve processes.
  • Collaborate with Glasgow Engineering department to sustain running laser product lines.
  • Create requirements within the product development process to ensure Design for Manufacturing.
  • Develop manufacturing concepts, including facilities, processes, automation, and key performance indicators.
  • Analyze and report on pilot run results, ensuring objectives for yields, touch time, and cycle times are met.
  • Define and create build processes and workflows.
  • Apply systematic problem‑solving methods, define and implement risk‑management measures, and confirm effectiveness.
  • Provide third‑level technical support during the initial production phase.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, physics, photonics engineering or a related field (preferred).
  • Basic understanding of operations processes and manufacturing concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and/or optical design principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for cross‑departmental collaboration.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Understanding of Lean principles.
  • Awareness of quality and cost considerations.
  • Flexibility to travel (approximately a quarter of the year to Germany, periods of one to three weeks).
Preferred Additional Skills
  • Experience in design, development, or manufacturing of lasers or laser components.

Working Conditions

Typical of a climate‑controlled professional office environment, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Scotland EHS standards.

Quality & Environmental Responsibilities

Depending on location, this position may be responsible for the execution and maintenance of ISO 9000, 9001, 14001 and other applicable standards within the Quality Management System and Environmental Management System.
