Senior Environmental Consultant

Join to apply for the Senior Environmental Consultant role at Arup

Dedicated to sustainable development, Arup is a collective of designers, advisors and experts working globally. Founded to be humane and excellent, we collaborate with our clients and partners using imagination, technology, and rigour to shape a better world.

As part of Arup’s Climate and Sustainability Services, our Environment team is at the forefront of delivering Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) for some of the UK’s most transformative projects. We collaborate across disciplines to influence nationally significant initiatives – from pioneering renewable energy schemes such as the Ocean Winds Offshore Wind EIA, to advancing sustainable transport through the West Yorkshire Mass Transit programme and driving critical infrastructure upgrades such as the Great Grid Upgrade and Thames Tideway.

We’re looking for consultants who are naturally curious, passionate about technical excellence, and eager to lead on the environmental agenda. You’ll play a key role in embedding sustainability into every project we deliver, helping shape solutions that make a lasting impact.

Here, your work will truly change the game. Imagine contributing to the UK’s first council‑led Just Transition Plan in Newham
, where climate action meets social and economic priorities, empowering community‑led initiatives. Or leading the EIA for Peak Cluster
, the world’s largest cement and lime decarbonisation project. At Arup, the opportunities to make a real difference are boundless.

The Opportunity

The position is for a Senior Environmental Consultant to be based in the North and focused on delivering environmental impact assessments for major national infrastructure projects in transport, water and energy across the UK. Clients will range from renewable energy developers to public sector authorities and from large organisations to start‑ups. You will be working in a global multi‑disciplinary team alongside other environmental, planning, engineering and urban design specialists to deliver industry‑leading environment and sustainability consultancy services.

Responsibilities
  • Write sections of environmental reports including EIA screening letters, EIA scoping reports, and non‑technical sections of Environmental Statements.
  • Review technical inputs for alignment with project details and EIA compliance.
  • Input to environmental design and apply environmental‑led design principles.
  • Contribute to bids and presentations.
  • Assist technical leads on projects, support teams with proposal preparation, and support team leaders in delivering major projects.
Benefits

We appreciate that everyone’s circumstances are different and it’s not always easy to commit to standard working hours.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Education to degree level, preferably a master’s degree.
  • Member of an appropriate institute, full membership or working towards full membership (e.g., Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals – ISEP).
  • Some experience in coordinating EIAs, successfully working with teams of technical specialists and multi‑disciplinary teams.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation, and experience applying relevant legislation, policy and guidance in respect to impact assessment for a range of project types.
  • Good analytical skills with a focus on finding solutions, particularly in relation to assessment delivery and bringing together multi‑disciplinary teams.
