The Opportunity:
A leading engineering organisation supporting the UK defence sector is seeking a Civil Engineer to join its multi-disciplinary team. You will play a key role in assuring the integrity, safety justification and long-term performance of nuclear infrastructure supporting major submarine programmes across two secure sites on the Clyde.
We would also welcome applications from these industries: nuclear energy, defence engineering, oil and gas, petrochemical, and major infrastructure projects.
This role would suit candidates working in these roles:
Civil Design Engineer, Structural Engineer, Senior Civil Engineer, Senior Structural Engineer, Nuclear Civil Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, Safety Case Engineer, Principal Civil Engineer, Structural Assessment Engineer, Marine Civil Engineer.
Your duties and responsibilities will be:
Prepare, develop and maintain detailed design substantiation documentation for nuclear infrastructure, ensuring compliance with current legislation, standards and best practice.
Evaluate and manage design alterations and concessions, providing clear technical justification for civil and structural modifications within a high-hazard setting.
Develop and review Examination, Inspection, Maintenance and Testing (EIMT) schedules, operating procedures and safety documentation to support through-life performance.
Present technical submissions to internal nuclear safety panels and contribute to Periodic Review of Safety reports.
Conduct independent technical assessments, review contractor submissions and verify calculations and engineering documentation produced by colleagues.
You will have the following qualifications and experience:
Extensive experience assessing and designing reinforced concrete and steel structures subject to dynamic loads such as seismic, blast, wind and environmental actions.
Strong background in reinforced concrete structures, ideally including marine or jetty infrastructure.
Demonstrable experience developing technical justifications for structural changes in regulated, high-risk industries.
Working knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes, with the ability to apply both theoretical and practical engineering principles across the asset lifecycle.
HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and Incorporated Engineer status (or equivalent experience); degree-qualified and/or Chartered Engineers are encouraged to apply.
Experience with in the UK nuclear sector, familiarity with safety case methodologies such as HAZID or HAZOP, and knowledge of UK or US nuclear regulatory frameworks would be advantageous. Candidates from non-nuclear backgrounds will be supported to complete relevant nuclear training within the first six months.
