About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a experienced Materials Engineer to join thier Power T&D business and focus on their major Skye Reinforcement Project.

Role Purpose

To support the management and delivery of materials engineering services within Major Projects.

Role requires an individual with strong up to date technical knowledge of materials engineering and industry best practice in all aspects. They will be a technically proficient with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field and have the professional credibility to engage and inspire others.

This is a site based role on the Isle of Skye.

What you'll be doing Accountabilities
  • Provide technical support to tenders and projects, including specialist materials engineering input and support operations teams in materials value engineering (VE) and in identifying appropriate VE robust solutions
  • Support the Major Projects and CSUK delivery teams, providing expert technical support in materials engineering design, assurance and management
  • Manage materials testing services to both tenders and project delivery (construction contracts), setting standards in line with the MP strategy and the BB sustainability goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with relevant materials engineering consultants and suppliers, managing their input in the design, development, pricing and delivery of technical solutions on site and in tenders
  • Provide technical support and attend work winning interviews with current or potential customers
  • Support and promote and support management initiatives
  • Support the Materials Engineering Lead(s) in materials risk management and carry out an assurance on projects, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern
  • Maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that MP is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards
  • Assist where requested, audits of construction and materials including testing and ensure all meet project specifications and relevant standards
  • Resolve material technical issues in a timely and efficient manner
  • Ensure procedures and quality systems are applied
  • Be aware of designers obligations of CDM
  • Mentor members of the team to deliver high performance and a culture of continuous improvement
  • Challenge the specifications/proposals and re-engineering to develop alternative value engineered proposals
  • Provide procurement strategies for both the re-use, purchase and disposal of materials.

Who we're looking for Essential

Degree qualified or have relevant professional experience in either Civil/ Structural/ Materials Engineering and have, or is studying towards a professional qualification (MICE, FGS). Must hold a valid CSCS card.

Strong up to date technical knowledge of materials engineering and industry best practice in all aspects. They will be a technically proficient with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field and have the professional credibility to engage and inspire others.

Understanding of BIM is required. The individual will have an understanding of the principles of framework procurement and experience within the most current forms of procurement.

Desirable

The individual should have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer and the Major Projects business.

Ideally this role would suit a candidate who is passionate and shows an excitement for their work. Someone who is willing to go the extra mile to exceed expectations and who has a key focus on meeting the requirements of their customer would be ideal. A quick learner, adaptable to change and someone who is organised would also suit the role well.
