Job Title
Naval Architect
LocationWestway, Glasgow
OverviewProvide Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering expertise in support of JFD’s design activities from concept design through to engineering release for manufacture, and support mobilising equipment for both planned exercises and emergency call-outs worldwide. Deliver engineering solutions that comply with JFD’s engineering strategy, governance framework, safety, cost, quality, schedule, and compliance requirements.
Responsibilities- Assess technical queries and provide engineering design input for new products and support the existing product range.
- Liaise with internal JFD departments such as sales, procurement, and production to ensure the best technical solution is delivered.
- Sourcing suitable components and materials, creating part numbers and bills of materials.
- Produce engineering documentation such as specifications, proposals, assembly instructions, test procedures, certification, and reports.
- Check detailed manufacturing drawings and documentation for adherence to company standards and compliance with internal and external regulations.
- Ensure engineering solutions are delivered on time and on budget.
- Conduct site visits to other JFD offices and client assets as required.
- Act as the technical checker of drawings and documentation generated in support of the Mechanical Engineer role.
- Degree qualified in a relevant engineering discipline or substantial industry experience.
- Post-graduate or professional qualification (e.g., Chartered Engineer status) desirable.
- Experience performing structural design and analysis, trim and stability analyses, and hull form analyses with stability, hydrodynamic performance, and seakeeping predictions.
- Expertise in deck layouts, load‑out plans, and ship general arrangement and configuration drawings.
- Proficiency with Product Lifecycle Management systems for generating and storing engineering packages.
- Experience coordinating design inputs from other engineering disciplines and performing feasibility design studies.
- Knowledge of class submittals, international quality and safety standards (ISO 9001, ISO 45001, etc.), and regulatory body rules (Class Standards, LR, DNV, National Standards, IMCA).
- Previous experience with submersibles or mobilising/demobilising equipment is advantageous.
- Strong problem‑solving, written and verbal communication, organisational, and mentoring skills.
- Ability to pass security clearance and possess a full UK driving licence.
