Human Factors Engineer – WSP

Join WSP to provide Human Factors and Ergonomics support to rail projects, working with systems engineering, integration, and assurance teams.

Role Responsibilities
  • Undertaking usability evaluations in line with Human Factors standards for equipment, layout, and HMIs to demonstrate systems support operators to perform tasks efficiently.
  • Conducting Project Ergonomics Surveys, including observing current railway signalling tasks, level crossing control, measuring operational workload, impact assessments, Training Needs Analysis, and analysing and presenting data to be fed into design activities and presented to clients.
  • Producing the Concept of Operations to support new or modified station or depot design, and conducting Access & Maintenance assessments, room layout, and workstation design including Control Room design.
  • Working with project teams to assess Accessibility and Design for Inclusion.
  • Eliciting Ergonomics requirements and working with project teams to deliver user needs.
Team Overview

The Human Factors Engineer works within the systems engineering, integration, and assurance team, supporting People‑Centred Design across multiple rail projects for clients such as HS2, Network Rail, and Crossrail. The role reports to the Technical Lead for People‑Centred Design and involves collaboration across multidisciplinary teams on specialist ergonomics assessments, operational concepts and plans, maintenance concepts, customer experience strategies, and staff recruiting and training strategies.

Qualifications
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline, or equivalent level of experience.
  • Experience applying ergonomics techniques and processes in the rail industry.
  • Knowledge of the railway industry, railway infrastructure and operational roles.
  • Previous Human Factors Experience.
  • Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (preferably working towards Chartership).
  • Experience managing and growing a team.
