Role Overview

The Trainee Utility Surveyor will support utility mapping and site investigation projects by attending site visits, assisting with service tracing, collecting survey data, and helping produce accurate records of underground utilities. This practical, site-based role is ideal for someone looking to develop a career in utility surveying, construction, civil engineering, or land surveying.

Key Responsibilities
  • Attend site visits and assist surveyors with utility detection, mapping, and site investigation works.
  • Support the setting out and marking of survey areas, utilities, service routes, and investigation locations.
  • Assist with the use of cable avoidance tools, signal generators, ground penetrating radar, GPS, and other survey equipment.
  • Record site measurements, readings, sketches, photographs, and survey notes accurately.
  • Help identify, locate, and mark underground services in line with project requirements and safety procedures.
  • Prepare, check, load, unload, and maintain survey equipment and site tools.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and support general site duties and project administration as required.
Training and Development

Full training will be provided by experienced utility surveyors. The successful candidate will learn safe site working, utility detection methods, survey equipment use, data recording, and utility mapping, and will be supported through day-release study towards an HNC in Civil Engineering.

Skills and Attributes
  • Interest in utility surveying, civil engineering, construction, land surveying, or site investigation work.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in different weather and site conditions.
  • Practical, reliable, and able to follow instructions carefully.
  • Good attention to detail when recording measurements, readings, sketches, and site information.
  • Good communication, teamwork, basic numeracy, literacy, and IT skills.
  • Positive attitude to health and safety, training, travel, and flexible site working hours.
Requirements
  • No previous utility surveying experience required; practical, outdoor, surveying, or construction site experience would be beneficial.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence and ability to travel to sites.
  • Must live within 30 miles of Glasgow City Centre.
    Willingness to complete site safety training and follow company procedures.
  • Right to work in the UK.
Reporting Line

Reports to the Survey Manager, depending on project requirements.
