The Responsible Mechanical Engineer is responsible for ensuring mechanical, civil and structural assets are designed, installed, commissioned, maintained, inspected and operated in compliance with their operating integrity windows, UK legislative requirements, site engineering standards and recognised engineering best practice.

The role acts as the senior technical authority for mechanical engineering, asset integrity and related compliance, ensuring risks are identified and managed, regulatory obligations are maintained, and Greatham assets remain capable of meeting production, safety and reliability requirements.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure Greatham mechanical assets are maintained, inspected, repaired and operated in compliance with UK legislation, the Greatham Site COMAH report, Tioxide standards and recognised engineering best practice.
  • Develop, lead and deliver the site strategy for mechanical engineering excellence, asset integrity and asset life planning, ensuring risks are identified and managed and assets remain capable of supporting production targets.
  • Lead the competency assessment, appointment and development of mechanical engineering duty holders, including professional mechanical engineers and relevant Qualified Persons.
  • Act as the technical interface for mechanical, civil and structural engineering matters with the Competent Authority, specialist external engineering service providers and the Competent Inspection Authority.
  • Identify, interpret and assure compliance with mechanical engineering standards, including management of deviations, approvals and technical governance requirements.
  • Ensure a professional engineering service is provided to support the improvement, maintenance and operation of Greatham assets, including appointment and management of external specialists and engineering companies.
  • Approve repairs and modifications involving EHS-critical equipment, ensuring appropriate technical assessment, compliance review and risk mitigation are completed.
  • Contribute as a member of the Site Engineering Leadership Team to the development and implementation of the site engineering strategy, improvement plans and capital equipment renewal expenditure plans.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Degree-qualified Engineer in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status and membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in engineering leadership roles within chemical or related sectors, including high-hazard manufacturing environments and Upper Tier COMAH assets.
  • Extensive experience of asset integrity engineering relating to fixed and rotating equipment.
  • Detailed knowledge of pressure systems integrity management in compliance with UK regulations, including PSSR and COMAH-related practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant professional standards, such as ASME, API and HSG guidance in mechanical integrity areas.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills, with the ability to engage, lead and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, internally and externally.
  • Ability to manage and work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Strong commitment to high standards, compliance, safe engineering practice and regulatory assurance.
  • Experience leading continuous improvement activity across a broad range of engineering, asset integrity or operational areas.
  • Experience acting as a Qualified Person under site process safety management standards.
  • Experience coordinating or participating in a mechanical engineering duty rota.
  • Experience managing mechanical engineering standards and associated technical governance.
  • Experience managing civil, structural or maintenance CAPEX budgets.
  • Experience interfacing directly with the HSE, Competent Authority or Competent Inspection Authority.
  • Experience overseeing PSSR compliance, lifting equipment compliance, critical machines or machine guarding.
