Responsibilities

As a Structural Engineer, you will:

  • Analyze, design, and detail structural systems for a variety of building structures, ensuring compliance with UK codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders to deliver creative, efficient, and cost-effective building solutions.
  • Perform structural assessments, calculations, and prepare technical documentation for clients and approvals.
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering design reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • Contribute to the delivery of environmentally sustainable engineering solutions in line with emerging trends and technologies.
  • Review and ensure the integrity of design information throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers and support knowledge-sharing to enhance team capabilities.
  • Attend site inspections, monitor projects during construction, and provide input on troubleshooting structural challenges as needed.
  • Actively engage in personal and professional development opportunities to stay at the forefront of industry innovation.
Qualifications

To excel in this role, the successful candidate should possess the following skills and experience:

  • Educational Background: A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent). Professional qualifications (e.g., Chartered Engineer status or working towards chartership) are highly desirable.
  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrable experience in UK Engineering Design for Civil/Structural projects, with a strong focus on building structures. Knowledge of Eurocodes and relevant British Standards required.
  • Software Proficiency: Proficiency in structural analysis/design software (e.g., ETABS, ROBOT, STAAD, Tekla, or similar) and CAD tools. Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows is a plus.
  • Problem Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to think creatively and provide innovative design solutions.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage and prioritize tasks effectively within deadlines while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships within a multidisciplinary team.

Day-to-Day

A typical day as a Structural Engineer might include:

  • Collaborating with the design team to develop structural solutions for an exciting new building project.
  • Reviewing project specifications and preparing calculations for structural components like beams, columns, and foundations.
  • Using structural analysis software to model and simulate building responses.
  • Attending project meetings or site visits to assess progress and address any structural challenges.
  • Drafting design drawings, reports, or presentations to effectively communicate ideas to clients and stakeholders.
  • Mentoring junior team members, providing guidance, and reviewing their work for accuracy.
  • Participating in internal discussions, brainstorming sessions, or professional development workshops to enhance knowledge and skills.
  • Staying updated on changes in UK engineering legislation, sustainability practices, and emerging technologies to apply best practices in all projects.
