Our client, a leader in the renewables and power distribution sector, is seeking a highly skilled Protection and Control Engineer to join their team focusing on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Glasgow. This permanent, full-time role plays a critical part in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of electrical protection schemes within utility-scale energy storage projects.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement protection and control (P&C) schemes for BESS applications, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Perform relay coordination studies, settings development, and protection scheme design for energy storage and grid integration.
Conduct system modeling and analysis using software such as ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT Power Factory, Aspen, or CYME.Design, test, and commission protective relays, SCADA systems, and communication networks for energy storage assets.
Work with IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and other industry communication protocols for protection and automation.
Coordinate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure seamless integration.
Perform fault analysis, root cause investigation, and provide solutions for BESS system failures.
Assist in developing functional specifications, control logics, and operating procedures for BESS protection systems.
Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging trends, and regulatory requirements related to BESS protection and control.
Qualifications &
Experience:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
Experience in protection and control engineering, preferably in power systems, renewable energy, or battery energy storage.
Hands-on experience with protective relays (SEL, ABB, Siemens, GE, Schneider) and relay programming.
Proficiency in power system analysis tools such as ETAP, PSCAD, DIgSILENT, or PSS/E.Strong knowledge of grid codes, IEEE, IEC, NERC, and utility interconnection requirements.
Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, HMI, and PLCs in power system applications.
Experience with NERC PRC compliance and protection coordination studies is a plus.
Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, schematics, and control logic diagrams.
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Preferred Certifications &
Skills:
Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) certification (or ability to obtain).Certified Protection Engineer (CPE) or equivalent industry-recognized qualification.
Experience with RTDS, HIL, or real-time simulation for protection testing.
Knowledge of energy storage technologies, inverter-based resources, and grid-forming inverters.
