Responsibilities
Bacardi is looking for an individual with a proven track record of environmental compliance, preferably in the Spirit Manufacturing environment in UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI). The role will require experience in the following key areas of compliance:
Regulatory and Permit Management
- Maintain and renew all site environmental authorisations, including water abstraction and discharge consents (e.g. SEPA's Controlled Activities Regulations, CAR, licences).
- Track and interpret environmental legislation (waste, air quality, chemicals) and assess the operational impact of new rules on Bacardi UK and ROI Supply Chain.
- Act as the primary liaison with the environmental regulator (SEPA, EA, EPA), managing inspections, correspondence, and reporting deadlines.
- Manage COMAH (Control of Major Accident Hazards) obligations alongside environmental duties, given the flammable nature of spirit manufacturing.
- Oversee management and lawful discharge of distillery-specific effluent streams — pot ale, spent lees, washings, and cooling water — ensuring they meet permit conditions on volume, chemical load, and temperature.
- Monitor and report on by-product disposal routes (e.g. spent lees reuse in cooling-tower makeup water, pot ale evaporation/land-spreading, dark grains processing) to minimise environmental and aquatic-toxicity risk.
- Manage water abstraction licensing and usage against permitted limits, supporting site water-stewardship targets and catchment risk management in coordination with the regulator.
- Supervise hazardous and non-hazardous waste segregation, storage, transfer-note documentation, and disposal in line with waste regulations.
- Track greenhouse gas emissions reporting obligations and support decarbonisation/energy-efficiency initiatives tied to compliance commitments.
- Conduct scheduled internal environmental audits and prepare the site for third-party or regulator inspections, documenting findings and corrective actions.
- Investigate environmental incidents (spills, discharge exceedances, over-abstraction events) and coordinate root‑cause analysis and remediation.
- Maintain compliance records, permit registers, and performance data to demonstrate ongoing conformance and flag deteriorating trends such as effluent quality failures or missed reporting deadlines.
- Support Bacardi UK Supply Chain’s Sustainability projects to deliver on the company’s ambitions to drive the sustainability agenda aligned with the Bacardi Good Spirited Program on water usage, GHG emissions, waste reduction, sustainable suppliers, packaging (plastic removal, recycled content)…
