The

role

The main role for the Health Visitor (HV) is to be the designated named HV for all Children within their caseload from antenatal to school entry age, excluding the unborn child. This requires the HV to commence the child’s planning process. To discharge these responsibilities the postholder will have a responsibility to monitor the child’s wellbeing and assess if a need is identified.

They will work in partnership with the child’s family and all involved agencies to produce a child’s plan which will require to be monitored.

In discharging these responsibilities the postholder is responsible and accountable for maintaining clinical, staff and information governance.

Key responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
  • Carry out statutory duties to assess, support, and improve the wellbeing of children on the caseload.
  • Work with professionals and families to assess needs, develop multi‑agency child plans, and monitor progress toward agreed outcomes.
  • Work in partnership with families and agencies to ensure all parties fulfil their responsibilities within the child’s plan.
  • Receive and analyse wellbeing concerns from multiple sources, assess risks, and initiate Child Protection procedures or elevate concerns when required.
  • Provide key input to Child Protection work, contributing to assessment, planning, and delivery of services, and participating in regular supervision.
  • Make professional decisions about information sharing, analysing risk, legal requirements, confidentiality, and human rights considerations.
  • Deliver the universal pathway, carrying out developmental and wellbeing assessments, using validated tools, and making timely referrals to meet children’s needs.
  • Support continuous quality improvement through audit, monitoring standards, and implementing corrective actions with the Team Manager.
  • Maintain effective communication with families and professionals, ensuring accurate documentation in line with NMC standards and legislation.
  • Support NHS Scotland values through appropriate behaviours and attitudes.
Team Work
  • Contribute to a learning environment, supporting assessment, mentorship, and supervision to maintain staff skills and knowledge.

  • Support the Team Manager in resolving complaints, sharing learning, and implementing action plans to improve service quality.

  • Contribute to developing and implementing local procedures, ensuring compliance with legislation and monitoring standards of care.

  • Participate in service development projects and implement agreed changes to care delivery.

  • Support the Team Manager in ensuring health and safety measures are implemented and upheld.

  • Assist the Team Manager with risk assessment and incident management, ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and reporting systems to safeguard staff, children, and families.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job Registration requirements
  • Registered nurse or midwife at degree level or equivalent
  • Post-registration qualification in Health Visiting/Public Health Nursing and be registered on Part 3 of the NMC register
Qualifications & knowledge
  • Educated to Masters level in a relevant nursing area, or
  • Can demonstrate an equivalent level of knowledge gained through, for example, completion of NES modules on Assessment, Leadership, and Critical Thinking.
  • Can provide advice using significant understanding and application of legislation relating to information sharing, data storage and public protection.
  • Knowledge of health and social care pathways related to safeguarding, early intervention and protection.
