Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Haematology

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for the post of Specialist Biomedical Scientist within the Haematology Department, Gartnavel General Hospital, Glasgow.

A comprehensive analytical, interpretive and clinical advisory Haematology service is provided from three sites in North Glasgow – Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI), Stobhill ACH (STB) and Gartnavel General Hospital (GGH). In addition to the routine workload, the Haemato‑Oncology Laboratory at GGH provides a secondary and tertiary referral immunophenotyping service and stem cell processing facilities.

This is a non‑rotational post based in the Haemato‑Oncology section of the laboratory. You will be expected to perform a variety of haematological tests and procedures, including the processing and issuing of cellular therapy products and performing flow cytometry analysis on samples to aid in the diagnosis of haematological neoplasms. Your duties will include performing complex analytical tests and procedures such as processing and issuing cellular therapy products and performing flow cytometry analysis.

You will participate in research projects and assist in the ongoing developmental work of the Department. The Haemato‑Oncology laboratory also provides flow cytometry (immunophenotyping) services for the region. The post holder will work with liquid nitrogen and within the liquid nitrogen storage area of the laboratory, demonstrating strict adherence to policies and procedures for safe working.

• The working pattern for this post is Monday‑Friday 0900 – 1700. The post holder will be required to work flexibly according to the needs of the Haemato‑Oncology department, but this does not involve participation in the 24‑hour working arrangement of the Haematology Department.

• Perform a variety of haematological analytical tests and complex procedures, including processing and issuing of cellular therapy products and performing flow cytometry analysis.
• Interpret, validate, authorise and report results.
• Instigate and recommend appropriate tests to senior colleagues.
• Report urgent results directly to clinical staff and, where indicated, to the Department medical staff.
• Liaise with other staff to ensure that the Department provides an efficient, cost‑effective service.
• Monitor the quality of analytical results and procedures.
• Supervise untrained and unqualified staff when necessary.
• Participate in research projects and assist in the ongoing developmental work of the Department.
• Be responsible for the first‑line maintenance and quality control of all equipment and reagents within the section to which you have been assigned.

• Must have an appropriate BSc Honours degree or equivalent acceptable for the Health and Care Professions Council Registration.
• Must be registered to practice as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC.
• Participation in an approved Continuing Professional Development Scheme.

• Minimum of two years post‑registration practical experience in a haematology laboratory and, preferably, working towards the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in a relevant discipline.
• Knowledge of SOPs and local and divisional policies and procedures including Health and Safety.
• Knowledge of laboratory computing procedures.
• Previous work in a haematology laboratory, stem cell laboratory or with flow cytometry.
