The RoleThe purpose of this role is to work within the nursing and multi-professional team to ensure a high standard of care to a defined patient group. Competently perform the necessary technical/invasive/physical aspects of care for this defined patient group. Applicants are invited to join our enthusiastic and innovative team within Glasgow Royal Infirmary Intensive Care Unit/High Dependency service. We would be keen to encourage colleagues with level 3 experience or acute ward experience to apply.
The Intensive Care and High Dependency Units care for a defined patient group who require complex interventions in the form of ventilatory support – invasive/non-invasive, cardiovascular support and renal support. Glasgow Royal Infirmary also provides ICU/HDU tertiary support for the specialties of Burns and Plastics;
Pancreatitis and Orthopaedics. We are seeking motivated individuals who strive to deliver patient centred care competently with an emphasis on the progression of service. Successful candidates will be offered a 12 month Competency Based Programme. On completion of this programme there will be a personalised self-development plan including the Critical Care Course which is accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University. There is also supported funding for management SVQ courses, NES courses and Masters at West of Scotland University.
There is an established Quality Initiative programme surrounding patient centred care so you should be a candidate with a “can do” attitude who will embrace change. Consideration will be given to all candidates who demonstrate an interest and enthusiasm for developing a career in Critical Care and we would be especially interested in attracting candidates with previous Critical Care experience.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern- Glasgow Royal Infirmary are recruiting three full-time Staff Nurses
- The shift pattern for this post is on a 24 hour rotational basis
- To assess patient needs, plan/implement and evaluate a programme of care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others
- Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping
- Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well being are met
- Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures
- Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well-being and future lifestyle by practising in an open transparent and inclusive manner, thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care
- Contribute to the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES Quality Placement Standards
- Contribute to the clinical appraisal of pre registration nurses
- Demonstrate own professional development
- The postholder is required to progress through a critical care competency based preceptorship programme to facilitate knowledge and skills development
- Support the implementation of research and clinical audit where appropriate
- Use of patient data management system
- Organise own time and that of junior staff and learners
- Ensures effective day-to-day management of other resources including stores supplies pharmacy and maintenance of equipment
