We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The role:The North Glasgow Biochemistry Laboratory Service is a large, UKAS‑accredited department operating across Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI), Gartnavel General Hospital, and New Stobhill Hospital, performing over 10 million tests annually. It provides comprehensive, 24/7 routine and specialist services, including endocrinology, lipids, trace elements, and neonatal biochemistry, serving NHS and non‑NHS clients.
The department will shortly be embarking on a project to re baseline specific analytes as part of the implementation of MSC III across Laboratory Medicine. This post is critical to ensuring the resource is available to guarantee the success of this project.
Applicants MUST possess a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science, preference will be given to candidates who have completed the integrated degree programme and be in possession of an I.B.M.S. Certificate of Competence or who already have registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:- Location based in Macewan Building - Glasgow Royal Infirmary Hospital
- Full‑time position (37 hours per week)
- Fixed‑term Contract (12 months duration)
- The working pattern for this post are Monday to Friday, 0845 - 1700
- To be involved in every stage of sample handling, analysing and reporting (i.e. allocation of unique number to sample, requesting the tests, centrifuging and separating serum/plasma, analysing the sample, validating and clinically authorising laboratory results).
- To be able to work as part of a team or independently, without supervision to carry out routine and specialised biochemical analysis within a diagnostic section of the laboratory, as detailed in the department’s Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs), in an efficient and timely manner meeting agreed turnaround times.
- To rotate throughout all sections of the laboratory, keeping up to date with changes within each section in order to be available to stand in for absent colleagues while still producing the same high standard of results.
- To participate in the Point of Care Testing (POCT) functions of the department.
- To report critical or urgent results directly to clinical and nursing staff, with reference to laboratory consultants where required.
- To give clinical/nursing staff advice regarding sample collection requirements, additional tests required and repeating tests.
- To undertake scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of expensive analysers (both in the laboratory and in wards/theatre sites) according to the departments stated maintenance procedures.
- To prepare reagents, calibration and quality control material for laboratory investigations.
- To be responsible for the economic use of reagents, calibrators, QC material and other consumables.
- To monitor stock levels and highlight ordering needs to line manager.
- Honours degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent (which is acceptable for HCPC registration)
- Required to be registered with HCPC as a BMS.
- Successful attainment of relevant specialist diploma, or equivalent knowledge and experience (annexe U applies)
- Post Registration Experience of Practical Work in a Clinical Laboratory would be desirable.
- Specialist Biomedical Scientists are required to have additional specialist knowledge in Clinical Biochemistry gained through CPD, attendance at seminars or short courses, in‑house training and journal based learning to post‑graduate diploma level.
- Computer literate with good IT skills including knowledge of analyser software, quality control packages, word processing, statistical and data analysis packages.
