Role

The Mental Health Liaison Nurse (MHLN) is a specialist nurse whose role is to assess students who present to the counselling service but whose needs are not likely to be met by the short model therapy provided within the University. This may also include students known to and accessing NHS services. The post holder will lead on the development of procedures and protocols that support partnership working with NHS services to ensure the effective management of students with mental health conditions, enabling them to engage successfully with their studies.

Responsibilities
  • Working within professional guidelines, the post-holder will have responsibility for the management of a defined caseload and will be required to work with a high degree of autonomy and professional accountability.
  • The post holder will support the development of care plans for students with complex and/or long term mental health difficulties.
  • The post holder will provide a comprehensive, specialist nursing service for clients with often complex health and social needs within a defined geographical area.
  • To provide support, advice and guidance to the broader team, ensuring an appropriate level of support to enable students with mental health difficulties to fully engage with their studies and University life.
  • To lead on the development of effective liaison and mental health care pathways between the University counselling service and NHS services (e.g. liaison with GPs, CMHT, Psychiatry etc.).
  • To support the establishment of multi-disciplinary governance arrangements e.g. interface meetings between Mental Health and Acute Services.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • An opportunity has arisen for a Mental Health Liaison nurse to join the Glasgow City HSCP team based within the Wellbeing and Inclusion Service.
  • The shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday 09:00 to 16:00.
  • This is a fixed-term post for 12 months.
Key responsibilities
  • Provide specialist information, advice, signposting, and support to students by undertaking mental health assessments (including urgent cases) and liaising with internal and external support services.
  • Follow relevant procedures (e.g., referral, hospitalisation) and deliver an appropriate professional response based on urgency, referring to specialist services or senior colleagues as needed.
  • Assist in managing University interventions in response to internal Crisis Team referrals and liaise with NHS services when required.
  • Liaise with colleagues in the University and NHS healthcare bodies to support smooth transitions to and from statutory care, ensuring risk is managed and outcomes for students are optimised.
  • Practise autonomously, making clinical judgments, identifying alternative courses of action, and delivering high-quality care.
  • Initiate, create, and maintain therapeutic, person-centred relationships with students.
  • Provide advice and support to promote healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Implement, maintain, and monitor evidence-based nursing care standards, including those agreed nationally through the Excellence in Care Assurance framework.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required
  • Relevant professional registration.
  • Post-registration clinical experience of assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating aspects of mental health care.
  • Experience of working in multi-disciplinary teams and liaising with other agencies in the provision of care.
  • Experience of using quality improvement skills to develop and improve clinical pathways.
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescriber.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook and other relevant business packages.
  • Previous experience of working across settings and with Acute services.
  • An understanding of the workings of HEIs and the challenges facing students’ wellbeing in HE.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to fulfil main duties and responsibilities as outlined in the job description.
  • Proven clinical assessment skills and a sound understanding of confidentiality.
  • Effective liaison, negotiation and referral skills.
  • Proven problem solving skills and the ability to use initiative, pro-actively seeking guidance and consultation on complex cases.
