Junior Clinician in Small Animal Diagnostic Imaging

The University of Glasgow Small Animal Hospital is seeking to recruit a Junior Clinician to join our Small Animal Imaging team as Diagnostic Imaging intern. This position might suit someone who has recently completed a rotating or previous imaging internship and who is looking for the next step towards specialization.

You will be joining a friendly Imaging team of two European Diagnostic Imaging specialists, an advanced practitioner/ultrasonographer, and three radiographers. Our diagnostic imaging suite includes an on-site 1.5T MRI (Siemens Magnetom Essenza 1.5T MRI), a 80-slice CT scanner (Canon Aquilion Lightning), digital radiography, and C-arm and ultrasonography (GE Logiq E9 for general ultrasound and a GE Vivid E95 for echocardiography) units.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support the delivery of an efficient and effective small animal imaging referral service, which acts as a hub between a tight-knit, supportive multidisciplinary team including many specialists working in a wide range of services within our award-winning state-of-the-art Small Animal Hospital. You will see a varied and interesting referral and emergency caseload.

To contribute to the delivery of an efficient and effective small animal diagnostic imaging referral service by providing clinical activity in the Small Animal Hospital under supervision of ECVDI Diplomates and residency-trained clinicians. To contribute to the School objectives relevant to national and international excellence in clinical service, teaching and research.

N.B. This posts is offered on a 1 year fixed-term basis, such that they offer the early stage clinical experience required as vets prepare for further specialist training, for example through residencies and masters formal training programmes. While appointments may be extended for a short-fixed term period where this would be in the mutual interest, in the interests of ensuring that veterinary career development is supported, and to assist with recruitment to the University’s Residency and Masters Programmes, the one year duration will remain the normal duration.

Clinical:

1. To contribute to the delivery of a small animal diagnostic imaging referral service by providing a high quality service and appropriate advice to colleagues/clinicians, external referring practices and owners that will consequently maintain a clinical referral workload necessary to support the commercial, teaching and scholarship activities. This may include organising cases for imaging procedures (e.g. in the context of breeding schemes) including owner communication, clinical work-up and documentation.

2. To support the development of novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.

3. To contribute to the out-of-hours referral service provision at weekends on a 1:4 basis if required.

4. To participate in the out-of-hours first opinion service if required, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required. To contribute to the Anaesthesia service for patients undergoing Imaging procedures if required.

5. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the appropriate speciality and the RCVS.

6. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the Small Animal Hospital.

7. To contribute to the ongoing development of the academic discipline of the Division.

Teaching:

8. To support the delivery of undergraduate and – if required - post-graduate teaching activities within veterinary medicine in accordance with established programmes.

9. To support the development of creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
