Health Care Support Worker Wide Phlebotomy Service

The Glasgow City Wide Phlebotomy Service delivers care in clinics and home settings to patients who are referred by GPs, members of the Primary Health Care Team and those from secondary care. Providing health education and health promotion to promote and maintain independent living for patients and support carers.

The Phlebotomy Service delivers care to patients within their own home and clinical environments. The post holder will participate in the care of patients under the direction of a registered nurse. Considering the lifestyle, race, gender and cultural background, and factors which impact on physical, mental or emotional health. The post holder will represent the values and beliefs of the nursing team as well as that of the organisation.

The post holder will have the ability to work with people on their own and as part of a team and the ability to work without direct supervision. They must have excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Minimum requirements include SVQ Level 3 in healthcare or equivalent experience.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a Skilled Worker visa or a Health and Care Worker visa. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).

The post holder will support the nursing team to deliver effective patient care within a Clinical/Home setting. Daily workload will be varied with a range of delegated activities.

• Duties will be to collect blood samples by venepuncture from patients as directed by Registered Nursing staff.
• Follow protocols for handling, labelling and documenting specimens.
• Ensure patients are informed of waiting/ appointment times.
• Allocation of patient appointment for domiciliary visit
• Maintain accurate and up to date clinical records.
• Follow procedures for reporting incidents to patients and staff, with particular reference to needle stick injuries.
• Ensure phlebotomy equipment is kept in a clean and safe manner.
• Participate in systems of practice support and personal development planning.
• Ensuring compliance with the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and Patient Confidentiality.
• The post holder will have the skills to undertake or assist with patients in emergency situations by providing basic life support.
