Clinical Fellow

Job Purpose

This role will enable the development of advanced clinical skills in Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SA ) and Adaptive Radiotherapy (ART), alongside clinical trial and research expertise, supporting the development of a clinical and research programme. It provides the postholder with an exciting opportunity to acquire skills and experience with the Ethos radiotherapy facility and the associated Hypersight high resolution imaging capabilities.

The postholder will contribute to the delivery and expansion of SA  and adaptive radiotherapy services at the Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Advanced radiotherapy training, clinical service development and patient care will form the primary focus of the post, complemented by participation in clinical research, audit, and a small amount of teaching.

1. Support, develop and maintain SA  and adaptive radiotherapy services through implementation and optimisation of new technologies and workflows; enrolment, treatment planning, supervision and clinical care of patients; and participation in relevant clinical trials.

2. Write and submit applications for Ethics and Research Management approval, as appropriate and in conjunction with PIs.

3. Manage data handling and interpretation of research results and take the lead in writing abstracts and presentations for scientific conferences and submitting papers for publication in appropriate peer-reviewed journals.

4. Prepare research reports, and submit at least one manuscript of material for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

5. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team meetings/discussions and departmental research group activities.

6. Present work at internal and external seminars and national/ international conferences as appropriate to enhance the profile of the research group.

7. Deliver teaching materials and supervise undergraduate/postgraduate student projects and contribute to the academic progress of students

8. Contribute to the organisation of project-related workshops, seminars or conferences.

9. Undertake some clinical work under an NHS honorary contract as detailed below.

10. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.

A1 MBChB or equivalent.

A2 Registered with General Medical Council [GMC] and licensed to practice [or able to be registered if overseas candidate].

Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCRPart
1) if a UK trainee,or equivalent experience.

B1 BSc or equivalent intercalated degree.

B2 Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g. prizes, awards, bursaries.

B3 Evidence of interest or experience in adaptive radiotherapy.

C1 Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially to achieve a common goal/School objective.

C2 Evidence of self-motivation, originality, innovation and the ability to work independently.

C3 Good organisational skills including the ability to manage research projects.

C4 Excellent communication both oral and written.

E1 Sufficient clinical experience in medicine or related specialties, relevant to the School.

F1 Previous experience in research.

F2 Previous experience in undergraduate teaching or postgraduate teaching.

All Clinical Fellows will have a mentor assigned at the time of appointment, with whom they will have regular meetings to monitor progress, identify and facilitate opportunities and help overcome any barriers to progress. Clinical Fellows are encouraged to attend workshops and training in generic transferable skills organised by the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences Graduate School. Regular attendance and contribution to the Radiotherapy Research Group is expected.

For registered medical practitioners, an honorary grading will be agreed with the relevant NHS Service, commensurate with the seniority of the appointee.

Clinical activities will include those required for research training such as recruitment to trials and conduct of clinical research.
