Policing relies on the secure, lawful and proportionate use of information to protect the public and support operational activity. As an Information Security Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring that information assets—particularly sensitive and personal data—are protected in line with legal, regulatory, and national policing requirements.
You will ensure appropriate organisational measures are in place to safeguard the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities -
- Support the development and maintenance of information security policies, standards and procedures aligned to national policing requirements and recognised best practice.
- Deliver assurance activity (audits, reviews, compliance monitoring) to ensure controls are effective and embedded.
- Contribute to governance processes, including tracking actions, issues and compliance returns.
- Identify, assess and manage information security risks, maintaining appropriate risk registers and treatment plans.
- Produce reports and metrics to support risk based decision making and inform senior stakeholders.
- Ensure alignment with national policing approaches to information risk management and assurance.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation including Data Protection Act 2018, UK GDPR, Freedom of Information Act
- Promote compliance with national policing standards and frameworks (e.g. NPCC guidance, Community Security Policy).
- Provide specialist information security advice and guidance to officers and staff, supporting operational and business requirements.
- Support Information Asset Owners (IAOs) and business areas to ensure information is handled securely throughout its lifecycle.
- Contribute to secure information handling considerations for projects and organisational change.
- Support the management of information security incidents, ensuring appropriate investigation, escalation and resolution.
- Assist in identifying root causes and implementing improvements to reduce future risk.
- Promote a positive information security culture, delivering awareness activity, guidance and training.
- Support communication strategies to improve understanding of responsibilities across the workforce.
