RoleThe Assisted Conception Service (ACS) at Glasgow Royal Infirmary is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic registered nurse Band 5 Staff Nurse.
The service is licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and provides semen analysis, surgical sperm retrieval (SSR), sperm cryopreservation, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo cryopreservation, donor insemination, oocyte donation, oocyte cryopreservation and pre‑implantation genetic testing (PGT). The ACS laboratory delivers approximately 1,100 cycles of IVF/ICSI, 600 frozen‑thawed embryo transfers and 300 IUIs with both partner’s and donor sperm annually.
The unit was awarded National Service Division funding to provide a Scotland‑wide PGT service in April 2005 and currently delivers approximately 75 cycles annually.
The post holder will join a team of dedicated nurses and will participate in the assessment and treatment of infertility. The post holder will be expected to deliver clinical work at an exceptionally high standard, with meticulous attention to detail. The candidate should be a state registered nurse.
Duration, Location and Working PatternThis is a permanent, part‑time post of 22 hours per week. The role is based at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Hours are to be worked over three days out of seven. Salary is pro‑rata for part‑time hours.
Key Responsibilities Clinical- Assess patient needs, plan, implement and evaluate evidence‑based programmes of care, utilising all available resources while taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and involving patients, families, carers and significant others.
- Create a culture where clinical practice is proactive and responsive to changing health‑care needs of the patient.
- Maintain patient records in line with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) guidelines for records and record‑keeping.
- Provide evidence‑based information to patients and their partners to facilitate informed choices and establish informed consent.
- Practice within the legal and ethical framework established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and national legislation, policy, guidelines and procedures.
- Work within the NHS GGC, Health & Safety Policy and guidelines and Executive (HSE) legislation.
- Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well‑being and future lifestyle by practising in an open, transparent and inclusive manner; thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
- Promote and support innovation in clinical practice.
- Contribute to the provision of an appropriate learning environment in line with NES quality placement standards.
- Demonstrate own professional development.
- Participate in research projects aimed at developing evidence‑based care within the field of infertility and related areas with the ultimate aim of improving patient care.
- Participate in the multidisciplinary team meeting where patient results are monitored, interpreted and treatment plans developed.
- NMC registered nurse.
- Evidence of post‑registration training and of continuing professional development.
- Ability to fulfil the criteria in the job description.
- Provide evidence of working and practising at all times in accordance with NMC standards.
- Gynaecology/Fertility experience desirable but not essential.
- Familiarity with the Code of Professional Conduct.
- Demonstrates knowledge and competence in nursing and clinical audit.
