role

You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post. A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Band 5 NMC Registered Nurse within the Ophthalmology outpatient department in Gartnavel General Hospital. The successful candidate will work as part of the Ophthalmology team of experienced RN’s and HCSW’s. You will have the responsibility of assessment delivery and supervision of all care needs within an outpatient setting.

You will work within a busy clinical area, working collaboratively with both nursing and medical teams. You will deliver a high standard of evidence‑based care utilising your clinical skills to assess patient needs, implement and evaluate care. Flexible, forward thinking, and able to work effectively within a changing and dynamic environment is essential. Excellent communication and sound decision‑making skills with evidence of ongoing professional development are required.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
  • Location based in Gartnavel General Hospital
  • Permanent Contract
  • Full‑time position (36 hours per week)
  • Shift pattern: dayshift – Monday to Saturday
Key responsibilities
  • Provide assessment of patient needs, implementation and evaluation of evidence‑based programmes of care, taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background, and ensuring involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
  • Maintain patient records in line with NMC guidelines for records and record keeping.
  • Practice within the legal & ethical framework as established by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) and national legislation to ensure patient interests and well‑being are met.
  • Work within NHS, NHS Greater Glasgow and HSE legislation, policy, guidelines and procedures.
  • Empower patients to take responsibility for their health, well‑being and future lifestyle by practising in an open, transparent and inclusive manner, ensuring patients have relevant information to participate in decisions about their care.
  • Ensure completion of clinical appraisals for pre and post registration nurses.
  • Demonstrate own professional development.
  • Identify research/clinical audit priorities in conjunction with relevant professional groups.
  • Lead the development of the research/clinical audit plan for the ward/department.

  • First level Registered Nurse

Employment information

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full‑time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part‑time working hours will be reduced on a pro‑rated basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
