Advanced Nurse Practitioner – Spinal Injuries & Neuro Rehabilitation B7​/​/Annex 21

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team within Queen Elizabeth National Spinal Injuries Unit, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. This post is a brand new post within Spinal Injuries and the successful candidate will work with the service in the development of a robust, sustainable and valuable clinician who will enhance the service and patient’s experience.

We are seeking to recruit, an enthusiastic and highly motivated registered nurses who has experience in spinal injuries or rehabilitation needs, and understands their medical and nursing requirements and is able to provide the appropriate care for this patient group, to join the existing National Spinal Injuries Multi-Disciplinary Team. The National Spinal Injuries Unit consists of a 12 bedded Spinal High Dependency Unit Edenhall & Philipshill Ward which is a 32 bedded Spinal Rehabilitation Ward with an Integrated High Acuity Respiratory Care Unit.

Patients are admitted from across Scotland and repatriated from abroad, the aim is for transfer to this specialist unit as close to time of injury as possible.

The successful candidate will be supported in completing their clinical skills course and non-medical prescriber certificate. While also supporting their professional development.

Working across role and organisational boundaries the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) manages the complete clinical care for their patients utilising expert knowledge base and clinical competence to support multi-professional teams within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, ensuring a high standard of clinical care, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Health and Safety Legislation.

As a clinical leader, the ANP has the freedom and authority to act autonomously in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, including prescribing, of patients with multi-dimensional problems. This includes the authority to refer, admit and discharge within appropriate clinical areas.

ANPs can work in or across all clinical settings, dependant on their area of expertise.

• Location based in Queen Elizabeth University hospital.
• Full-time position (36 hours per week).
• Shift pattern for this post is Monday to Friday.

• Take and record a patient’s history including medical, family and social history, talking to the patient, relatives or other carers as appropriate. There may be significant barrier to understanding and acceptance due to sensitive or contentious information given and received.
• Conducts a comprehensive clinical examination of the patient including a physical examination of all systems and a mental health assessment
• Screen patients for disease using clinical and other findings such as laboratory results or x-rays
• Make diagnostic decisions based on interpretation of clinical and other findings such as laboratory results or x-rays
• Support with application and Halo maintenance
• Applies high level decision-making and assessment skills to formulate appropriate differential diagnoses based on synthesis of clinical findings.
• Has the authority to request, where indicated, appropriate diagnostic tests / investigations using judgement and clinical reasoning, based on differential diagnoses
• Conduct invasive and non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures where appropriate.

• ANPs are educated at Masters Level in advanced practice and are assessed as competent in this level of practice. As a clinical leader they have the freedom and authority to act and accept the responsibility and accountability for those actions. This level
