About the job

Join our Risk R&D department where technology innovation, strategic architecture, and domain expertise come together to deliver industry-leading Risk solutions. As a Software Development Manager on the AI, Architecture, and Innovation team, your primary focus will be hands‑on software development and technical leadership. This role combines active participation in the design, development, testing, and delivery of software with a smaller amount of managerial and administrative responsibility.

This is not a traditional people-management position. While you will support and develop team members through coaching, mentoring, and performance management, the majority of your time will be spent working alongside the team: designing solutions, writing code, reviewing implementations, troubleshooting issues, and helping drive successful delivery of key initiatives.

As a Manager, Software Development, you will:

  • Lead development project designs and enforce technical standards.
  • Provide technical leadership to the team through code reviews, mentoring, training and managing the activities of the team.
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders (other managers, developers, user interface designers, product managers) to ensure implementation satisfies functional requirements and is consistent with established R&D standards.
  • Manage and lead project scoping and scheduling; track progress of individual tasks and alert executive management and stakeholders of concerns meeting schedules, while following established R&D standards.
  • Maintain accountability for the entire life cycle of the code including support for both internal and external consumers.
  • Contribute to product direction through collaboration with Product Management, Marketing, Sales, and others within SAS.
  • Manage all aspects of the team including teamwork, performance management, feedback, professional growth through collaboration with SAS human resources, SAS education and executive leadership.
  • Work with senior management to develop, prioritize, and assign project objectives and responsibilities to individual resources.
  • Engage with upper management in major decisions and complex issues.
  • Perform hands‑on development tasks including writing code, performing code reviews, writing and reviewing tests, monitoring test reports, designing new features, demoing new features, etc.
  • Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications

  • Requires a minimum of eight years of related programming or testing experience, including one year of project lead, supervisory or management experience. Eight years of professional programming or testing experience may be considered in lieu of previous management experience.
  • Bachelors degree in computer science or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of generative AI, the software development lifecycle, and at least one object-oriented language.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor or lead others, set clear goals and expectations, provide timely feedback, and build an inclusive…
