Job Summary

As a Digital Developer working within the Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Product Centre (OTDT PC) at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), you will use your technical expertise to develop and improve digital services that support our vital work.

Working across the full software development lifecycle, you will design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and support applications and databases used across NHSBT. You will tackle complex technical challenges, work with colleagues to understand their needs, and turn those needs into effective digital solutions. The focus of this role is on cloud technologies. Our primary software is Azure, so an understanding of Dev Ops, Storage, API Manager, App Services, Key Vaults and log analysis is preferable

You will also explore new technologies, share your expertise with colleagues, and help integrate new solutions with existing systems. This is an opportunity to contribute your technical skills to meaningful work, while continuing to learn, innovate, and develop within a specialist digital environment.

Main duties of the job
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and support applications, information systems, and database services that help NHSBT deliver its services effectively.
  • Take ownership across the software development lifecycle, using your expertise to find effective solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Work with colleagues to understand requirements, explore opportunities for improvement, and turn business needs into practical digital solutions.
  • Maintain existing applications and ensure changes are supported by appropriate documentation and change controls.
  • Help integrate new digital solutions with existing NHSBT systems, working collaboratively with suppliers and colleagues.
  • Explore emerging tools, technologies, and industry best practice, helping NHSBT make informed use of new approaches.
  • Identify technical constraints, dependencies, and delivery risks, and take appropriate action to support successful delivery.
  • Share your knowledge through training and knowledge transfer, helping colleagues learn and develop their technical capability.
  • Contribute your expertise to the development of software, database, and Digital Services strategies.
About You Experience and Knowledge
  • Practical experience across the full software development lifecycle, with knowledge and experience of both agile and traditional development methodologies.
  • Experience in at least one of the following three, while the other two are desirable:
Azure development including Dev Ops, Storage, API Manager and log analysis; IBM ODM/BAW and advanced SQL; or Oracle SQL/PL/SQL, ORDS and Oracle APEX
  • Knowledge of estimation methods, Agile/Lean and traditional methodologies, object-oriented analysis and design, database design, UML, HTML, JavaScript, JQuery, XML, XSD, JSON, and relevant unit-testing frameworks.
  • Ability to interpret highly complex information, make software design decisions, and independently identify and resolve technical issues throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of relevant IT legislation, including the Data Protection Act, Computer Misuse Act, and Freedom of Information.
Qualifications And Training
  • Postgraduate qualification in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent proven software-development experience, including experience in the mandatory core technology set for this vacancy.
  • Demonstrable commitment to your own continued professional development (CPD).
