The

role

As a Police Pilot, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Operating advanced helicopter platforms in support of police operations, you'll play a critical role in assisting law enforcement activities, public safety missions, surveillance operations, and emergency response requirements across Scotland.

This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced pilot with exceptional situational awareness, sound judgement, and strong decision‑making skills to work within a highly professional environment where safety, operational excellence, and teamwork are paramount.

You'll be part of a skilled aviation team supporting demanding and rewarding operations while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and flight safety.

Day-to-day you'll be required to

  • Conduct Single Pilot Day and Night police aviation operations in support of Police Scotland.
  • Maintain the highest standards of flight safety and operational excellence at all times.
  • Work closely with operational teams and customer stakeholders to deliver mission‑critical services.
  • Meet company and customer Health & Safety responsibilities while adhering to all aviation regulations and operating procedures.
  • Operate within a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern, supporting a 24/7 operational capability.
Residence Requirement

This is a full‑time single pilot position. Due to the operational nature of the role, candidates must reside:

  • Within 25 nautical miles or 45 minutes travelling time from the Glasgow operating base.
Essential Qualifications for the Police Pilot:
  • UK ATPL(H) or CPL(H) with Instrument Rating (IR)
  • Valid UK Class 1 Medical.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Valid Passport, driving licence, Right to Work in the UK, Fluent English
Essential experience of the Police Pilot :
  • 1,000 hours Pilot in Command of aircraft, of which 500 hours must be Pilot in Command on twin turbine helicopters.
Or:
  • 1,000 hours as Co‑Pilot in Police or Helicopter Emergency Medical Service operations, of which 500 hours must be Pilot in Command Under Supervision and 100 hours Pilot in Command on twin turbine helicopters.

In addition, you must possess:

  • A minimum of 2,000 hours total helicopter experience.
  • 500 hours operating experience on twin turbine helicopters in a similar operational environment, including a significant proportion of low flying.
  • 50 hours total at night, including 25 hours Pilot in Command hours VFR at night
Candidates will ideally:
  • Be qualified and instrument rated on the EC135.
  • Have current or recent UK police aviation experience.
  • Have experience of NVIS operations.
  • Experience operating in complex operational environments.
Security Clearance

The successful candidate must have the ability to achieve and maintain both Standard (BPSS) and Police Scotland security clearances for this role. Further details are available at United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels -  ()
