Geotechnical Engineering Lead – Geotechnical & Tunneling Team

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Geotechnical Engineering Lead for our Geotechnical and Tunneling Team!

Responsibilities
  • Perform geotechnical engineering design and analyses for bridges, buildings, tunnels, underground structures, and retaining walls with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare/draft geotechnical memoranda, data reports, and design reports.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and presentations that explain research, concepts, and recommendations to prevent, control, restore, or address design and/or construction issues or opportunities; collaborate with other disciplines and project partners.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating geotechnical work in New England and other areas.
  • Involved from project inception to completion in the management of design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, laying out installations, foundations, slopes, retaining structures, embankments, and other soil or rock-supported systems.
  • Develop and incorporate advanced technologies, monitoring devices, building materials, modeling techniques, design requirements, and operating strategies to meet safety and functionality standards for end‑users, transportation systems, and structures while supporting future‑ready solutions.
  • Oversee and monitor cross‑functional teams of engineers, planners, and scientific professionals to execute project work on mid‑level and/or multiple concurrent projects; manage budgets, track hours and expenses, complete tasks, handle costs, quantities, permit applications, construction, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Coordinate, review and approve infrastructure design plans, ensuring data integrity and compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Prepare data and visualizations (tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, cross‑sections, and illustrations) for interpretation or presentation of complex data and analyses.
  • Remain current in latest geotechnical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geotechnical or Tunneling Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 7 to 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Professional engineer license required.
  • Extensive knowledge of geotechnical engineering and related disciplines (Structures, Civil, Environmental).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, discipline‑specific design software (e.g., Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Geo Slope, Plaxis, Settle, LPILE, Group, GRLWEAP, SEEP/W, Rock Sciences Software), technology, mathematical principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and other tools.
  • Flexibility to a variety of schedules and the ability to prioritize responsibilities and adapt quickly to changes.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and perform field work.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct; adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Uphold workplace safety and comply with WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, computations, statistical analysis, and arrive at the most effective, economical, and logical solution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness at coordinating and assertively directing subcontractors and others to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project‑specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project‑specific requirements.
