GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking a Geologist 3 (E08) under the direction of an Engineering Geology Manager for the Geotechnical Engineering Group. The position is based in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, PA;
Canton, OH;
Charleston or Bridgeport, WV; or Richmond, VA, and requires travel and fieldwork in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia.
- Manage and perform engineering geology assignments involving subsurface investigations and geologic site characterization for a variety of facilities (e.g., embankments, cut slopes, foundations, bridges, dams, retaining walls, transmission lines, buildings, pipelines, waste landfills, and impoundments). Typical work includes monitoring and logging of test borings, site reconnaissance, installation and monitoring of geotechnical field instrumentation, and sample selection for laboratory testing.
- Perform earthwork construction monitoring and foundation inspection, interpreting specifications and construction drawings, evaluating site conditions, monitoring construction activities, and conducting field testing of soils.
- Prepare boring logs and geologic cross-sections; assist with proposals, budgets, schedules, specifications, and reports.
- Assist with geotechnical engineering designs such as rock/soil slope stability, cut-slope and fill embankment design, shallow and deep foundation recommendations, and landslide remediation.
- Travel may be daily local or weekly out-of-town for fieldwork.
- Attention to detail; possess basic skills for geological/geotechnical investigations and construction monitoring; follow GAI procedures; learn and apply record-keeping protocols, data collection, recording, and interpretation skills; conduct literature research and review; available for frequent travel and field work.
- Candidate may need to traverse steep terrain and carry up to 50 lbs.
- 5–8+ years of related experience.
- B.S. or M.S. in Geology or Engineering Geology.
- Professional Geologist (P.G.) license.
- Valid driver’s license with no significant motor-vehicle record blemishes.
- Lead field tasks from the field or office.
- Collect geotechnical and environmental samples (soil, sediment, groundwater, soil vapor, stormwater), log soil borings, install monitoring wells, perform site inspections, conduct compliance monitoring during construction, and write clear field notes.
- Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for interpretation or presentation.
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations explaining research findings and geotechnical solutions.
- Start independently contributing to work plans for geologic and geotechnical projects.
- Receive and execute general direction on key objectives.
- Receive guidance on unconventional/complex problems and new approaches for assignments with conflicting criteria.
- Assist with mentoring, directing reports and junior staff by providing guidance, explaining professional responsibilities, and reviewing work products.
- Attend project meetings and present specific aspects of geologic assignments.
- Demonstrate professional attitudes such as creativity, curiosity, flexibility, and dependability.
- If a direct supervisor, exhibit skill in mentoring, decision-making, conflict resolution, task delegation, and leadership as a role model.
- Communicate effectively in English (verbal and written) to technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Identify and acknowledge principles of teamwork and leadership.
- Interact primarily with internal project team members.
