SummaryThe Practice Assistant in the College of Dental Medicine – Arizona (CDMA) provides assistance to the dentist and student dentist related to examining and treating patients. In the Dental Institute the role is responsible for day‑to‑day maintenance of the CDMA’s clinics, including coordination of materials, equipment, and supplies, answering patient phone calls, scheduling appointments, and relaying patient messages to students and faculty.
Incumbents work in multiple areas of the clinics on a rotational or specific assignment basis, report directly to the Practice Assistant Supervisor, and must adapt to schedule changes based on clinic hours.

- Equipment, Instrument and Consumable Supplies
- Participate in the cycle of equipment, instruments and supplies.
- Deliver instrument carts to student dentists within the various suites.
- Check out equipment, instruments and supplies to the student dental provider.
- Check used instruments and equipment back in.
- Deliver instrument carts with used supplies back to the sterilization room and return used instruments.
- Group Practice Clinic Functionality
- Schedule and confirm appointments to optimize clinic utilization, reviewing schedules and overdue appointments.
- Keep treatment records.
- Report malfunctioning equipment to appropriate personnel.
- Identify and report general maintenance problems.
- Assure presence of necessary materials.
- Request and maintain supplies needed for day‑to‑day operation.
- Enforce clinic policies including infection control guidelines.
- Participate in instrument, equipment and supply coordination.
- Receive, greet, and prepare patients for treatment.
- Acquire digital radiographs, intra‑oral, extra‑oral and cone‑beam computed tomography.
- Assist dental students with radiograph acquisition.
- Oversee and demonstrate correct radiographic technique to students and Practice Assistants.
- Assist students in planning and ordering lab‑fabricated surgical guides.
- Maintain sterilization and disinfection of radiology instruments and equipment.
- Import outside radiographs into the electronic chart.
- Assist with dental operatory equipment infection control.
- Assist students and candidates with radiographs for dental board exams.
- Assist with training employees.
- Record keeping of radiation dosimetry.
- Facilitate daily radiology clinic operations and assist radiology faculty.
- Education and Compliance
- Act as an integral component in the quality assurance of the College of Dental Medicine.
- Work with students, staff and faculty to ensure adherence to infection control guidelines, OSHA standards, and HIPAA privacy and security protocols.
- Provide information on violations of clinic policies to management.
- Sterilization and Dispensing
- Responsible for dispensing, collecting, and processing dental instruments, equipment and consumables used in the College of Dental Medicine clinics for patient treatment and student education.
- Prepare and process instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Clean, disinfect, sterilize, package and restock instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Utilize aseptic techniques when handling instruments and supplies.
- Track, inventory and dispense instruments, supplies and equipment.
- Package and sterilize disposable supplies such as gauze and cotton rolls.
- Assist with data entry, ordering and sorting clinical supplies.
- Assist in maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the sterilizing and dispensing rooms.
- Maintain stock of supplies required to operate the sterilizing rooms.
- Assist in training new employees.
- Educate staff, faculty and students about sterilization and infection control issues.
