CLASS SUMMARY

Under general direction, incumbent(s) coach sports activities to students, including creating game plans, observing practice drills, and explaining safety, rules, and history of the sport. Incumbent(s) schedule activities and tournaments, prepare area of use, and set up appropriate staff needed to carry out practices and games.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Creates game plans and practice drills to implement during competition. Observes students during practice to detect and correct mistakes. Oversees students during competition and tournaments.
  • Explains and enforces safety rules and regulations. Lectures on history and purposes of sport. Explains method of keeping score and demonstrates use of apparatus and equipment.
  • Utilizes health service protocols to ensure safety for students. Explains and demonstrates principles, techniques, and methods of regulating movement of body to achieve proficiency in activity.
  • Schedules buses, staff, referees, custodial, and cafeteria that are needed to carry out practices and games. Ensures students are picked up by appropriate person(s) and prepares area of use (i.e., gym, field, etc.).
  • Communicates expectations, status, schedules, and rules of the athletic program to the school administration, staff, parents, and students. Holds parent-athlete meetings.
  • Ensures athletes meet grade and school behavior requirements. Demonstrates good sportsmanship.
  • Announces and posts tryout information. Passes out and collects permission slips. Selects and posts members of the team.
  • Purchases, maintains, and repairs equipment and uniforms. Keeps inventory and records on all equipment and uniform purchases.
  • Attends meetings with other coaches in the District. Organizes competition and tournaments.
  • Holds sports recognition events. Distributes awards and recognition.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications:
    High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to being hired.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    It is preferred that applicant possesses the following qualifications; however, these qualifications are not required to be eligible for this position:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Education;
    • One year of teaching experience;
    • Valid Arizona Department of Education Teacher Certificate.
    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

    To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Skills required include:

    • Understanding early, middle, and adolescent childhood;
    • Supervising children including safety and health issues;
    • Developing age-appropriate lessons for children;
    • Instructing children;
    • Identifying safety hazards to children;
    • Understanding rules of the sport;
    • Engaging and encouraging communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, etc.
