Summary: Under direct supervision, the assistant provides material support, individual and group assistance, skill demonstrations, communication with parents, input to lesson plans, photocopying, and classroom preparation for special education students. The assistant also monitors students on the playground and in the cafeteria.
Essential Functions- Work with special education students individually or in groups on academic, social, emotional, functional, language, and behavior skill projects, demonstrating techniques to aid learning and enforcing school policies.
- Assist with feeding, toileting/diapering, physical activities, and behavior management to create a positive environment; manage adaptive equipment; analyze instructional assessment data to plan and deliver instruction.
- Maintain discipline by monitoring behavior, issuing warnings or formal notices, and preparing incident documentation.
- Ensure student safety on playground, cafeteria, and during recess; report incidents to administration and escort students to library, cafeteria, and buses.
- Prepare classrooms for activities, set up furniture, handle materials, clean up, and maintain order.
- Communicate with parents regarding progress, improvements, truancy, and behavior; interpret communications when needed.
- Copy and prepare educational materials.
- Assist teachers in planning and coordinating lesson plans, sharing ideas, and providing student feedback.

To be eligible for this position, an applicant must meet the following required qualifications. Verification of these qualifications is necessary.
- High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) prior to hiring.
- Must receive CPR certification within thirty days of hire.
- All Title I Schools:
- Completion of 60 college credit hours (Associate’s Degree) from an accredited institution OR successful completion of an Arizona State approved paraprofessional test (offered by WESD free of charge prior to hire).
- Six months experience working with children in a learning environment.
To perform the job successfully, an individual must have skill sets that include, but are not limited to:

- Implementing appropriate techniques and procedures.

- Engaging and encouraging communication skills with supervisors, staff, and students.
The role requires frequent use of hands, reaching, and talking/hearing; standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; occasional climbing; and lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
