Research Assistant – AZ – Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics
Position Summary:
A grant‑funded Research Assistant position is available in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at Midwestern University, Glendale campus. The laboratory investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying prion diseases and other neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. The successful candidate will collect, analyze, and interpret data to advance the research program, review experiments with the Principal Investigator, oversee laboratory operations, and interact regularly with students, faculty, and staff.
Duties
- Perform a wide variety of standard research procedures under supervision, following established protocols.
- Track results, compile data using appropriate formats and graphs, and analyze data with training and supervision.
- Maintain an accurate lab notebook.
- Adhere to laboratory safety procedures.
- Conduct standard maintenance of the laboratory.
- Obtain quotes, perform ordering, and manage receiving duties for lab supplies.
- Organize and maintain adequate lab stock supplies.
- Contribute to abstract submissions and poster preparation.
- Maintain mouse colony and tissue cultures for experiments with training and supervision.
- Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related life‑sciences field from an accredited institution.
- 0–2 years of research‑related experience.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to train others in laboratory techniques.
- Prior experience in microbial and tissue culture, protein biochemistry, molecular biology techniques, and animal handling is especially encouraged.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Requires frequent sitting, walking, standing, and handling of lab equipment; may lift up to 25 lbs routinely and up to 50 lbs occasionally.
- Involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, toxic and caustic chemicals, and airborne particles.
- Work environment noise level usually moderate.
