Software Engineering Lead

Location:
On-site in Glendale, AZ

Employment Type: 1-Year Contract

Job summary:

NESC Staffing is seeking an experienced Software Engineering Lead to spearhead enterprise data initiatives with a primary focus on Azure Data Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. The ideal candidate brings deep architectural expertise across Azure Data Lake and Databricks, strong security fundamentals within Azure, and a consistent record of leading teams to deliver scalable, secure data solutions.

Major Responsibilities
  • Architectural design and implementation
  • Define and implement robust, scalable data architectures on Azure Data Lake and Databricks.
  • Establish best practices for ingestion, storage, processing, and retrieval; tune for performance and cost.
  • Build reliable, repeatable data workflows and standards.
  • Data governance and security
  • Implement and maintain Azure security controls, including subscription management, RBAC, encryption, and key management.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements; coordinate periodic audits and vulnerability assessments.
  • Document policies and champion data governance adoption across teams.
  • Team leadership and collaboration
  • Lead and mentor data engineers; set technical direction, review designs/code, and develop career paths.
  • Partner with data scientists, analysts, and IT to deliver data-driven outcomes.
  • Plan sprints, manage scope, and keep deliverables on schedule using agile practices.
  • Platform optimization and monitoring
  • Oversee deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management of Azure Data Lake and Databricks environments.
  • Implement monitoring/alerting, capacity planning, cost management, and reliability improvements.
  • Evaluate and introduce new Azure services that enhance scalability, security, and developer velocity.
  • Strategic planning and roadmap development
  • Create and maintain a multi-phase data engineering roadmap aligned to business objectives.
  • Recommend lakehouse patterns and modernization strategies; drive cloud cost optimization.
  • Track industry trends and translate them into practical platform improvements.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 8+ years in data engineering with 3+ years in a formal leadership role.
  • Extensive hands‑on experience with Azure Data Lake, Databricks, and adjacent Azure services.
  • Proven success architecting and implementing large‑scale, production‑grade data solutions.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • Proficiency in SQL and strong data modeling fundamentals.
  • Deep understanding of Azure security (subscriptions, RBAC, encryption, networking).
  • Experience designing ETL/ELT pipelines and working with big data technologies.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD and Dev Ops for data (infrastructure as code, testing, and release automation).
  • Working knowledge of Business Objects (reporting, universes, performance considerations).
  • Ability to field detailed, in‑depth technical questions and speak to recent, hands‑on implementations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams, set standards, and uphold quality.
  • Clear, concise communication with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Analytical, proactive problem solver with strong ownership.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience implementing lakehouse architectures.
  • Familiarity with data governance frameworks and regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA).
Work Location and Terms
  • Contract length: 1 year.
