Operating Room Nurse; OR RN

Overview

OR RNs provide care for patients before, during, and after surgery. Duties include patient education, circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse, and potentially First Assistant. Work alongside surgical teams to make sure that patients are receiving the best possible care; serve as liaisons between the surgical team and the patients' families. OR RNs work in the operating room of a hospital. There are several types of operating rooms depending on the type of surgery such as:
General, Orthopedic, Neuro, Spine, Urology, and Cardiac/Thoracic.

• Provide care for patients before, during, and after surgery.
• Serve as circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse; potentially First Assistant.
• Collaborate with surgical teams to ensure high-quality patient care.
• Serve as liaison between the surgical team and patients' families.
• Work in hospital operating rooms of various types (General, Orthopedic, Neuro, Spine, Urology, Cardiac/Thoracic).

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): 4-year education
• Associate s Degree in Nursing (ADN): 2-year education
• Must earn an ADN or BSN and pass the NCLEX to obtain RN licensure.
• RN must hold an active state license.
• ACLS is often required.
