Position SummaryThe Clinical Nurse Supervisor has direct responsibility for the assigned department. The Clinical Nurse Supervisor assumes shift accountability for directing all activities related to clinical supervision, monitoring and evaluating staffing and scheduling needs of the department. Is responsible for hiring, developing and evaluating staff. Demonstrates the skills of clinical and technical competence and independently demonstrates effective critical‑thinking skills for problem‑solving and priority setting.
Promotes an effective team environment and supports the mission, vision, values, and standards of service and quality care. Responsible for quality, safety, patient experience, employee engagement, and financial outcomes of the department.
- Coordinate and direct patient‑care operations of the unit on a shift basis, providing clinical supervision and ensuring consistent implementation of quality, patient safety and regulatory standards.
- Assign staff to patients on a shift based on acuity level, skill and competency, workload and patient volume; assess staff competencies and coordinate staffing for current and next shift with departmental leaders.
- Act as the unit patient‑flow coordinator, facilitating discharges, admissions and transfers; proactively triage patients and communicate with House Supervisor/Bed Control/Admitting and transferring departments, ensuring timely computer entry of transactions.
- Promote positive working relationships within the unit and with other departments, maintain clear communication regarding unit needs and incidents, and initiate service recovery as needed.
- Model professional growth through participation in in‑services and educational programs, and review current literature.
- Participate in shared‑governance activities and lead implementation of initiatives recommended by councils, including performance‑improvement activities.
- Contribute to planning the unit budget and direct shift activity to assure compliance with budgetary guidelines (cost/unit of service or hours per patient‑day productivity standards).
- Model RN direct‑care responsibilities, including planning, providing and documenting individual goal‑directed patient/family‑focused nursing care using evidence‑based practices; practice autonomously, consistent with practice standards and research‑based policies and procedures.
- Assure departmental commitment to performance improvements, lead by example, utilize resources efficiently and effectively, maintain a safe environment, address patient‑population specific needs, implement National Patient Safety Goals, assign breaks and meal times, adjust staffing…
