Performs intermediate maintenance and repair work, including routine mechanical work and minor overhauls to a wide variety of fleet equipment.
This is the second of a four-level classification series of fleet technicians with progressively more responsible duties.

A Fleet Technician is assigned to one of the following assignments:
Automotive Assignment- Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on light-duty and medium-duty fleet equipment such
- Fleet equipment includes various types of vehicles, including police patrol, passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, and landscaping equipment.
- Repair and maintain all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of light-duty passenger vehicles, police patrol, medium-duty trucks, motorcycles, or landscaping equipment
- Repairs and preventative maintenance on various gasoline and diesel-powered heavy-duty equipment such as solid waste trucks, tractors, heavy-duty trucks, and fire apparatus.
- Repairs and maintains all vehicle systems, including engine, transmission, driveline, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical, HVAC, and hydraulic systems.
- Performs major and minor repairs and maintenance on a variety of heavy-duty gasoline and diesel equipment, solid waste trucks, construction equipment, bucket trucks, backhoe/loaders, street sweepers, and fire apparatus
Five (5) years of experience as a skilled equipment mechanic in a specialized field of equipment repairs such as automotive repair, diesel repair, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, or industrial equipment. Completion of an accredited automotive or diesel training program at a trade school or college may substitute for two (2) years of experience. Minimum of two (2) current ASE certifications.
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.
Knowledge of:- Principles and practices of the mechanical trades, including the use and care of tools and equipment
- Occupational hazards and safety procedures associated with mechanical maintenance work, industrial electricity, hydraulics, and heavy equipment
- Welding and welding techniques
- Proper use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with established guidelines
- Take direction, receive training, and develop technical skills
- Determine and correct causes of vehicle and equipment malfunctions and defects
- Mentor other fleet technicians
- Interpret technical manuals and related diagrams and instructions
- Read and comprehend Materials Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in the work environment
- Estimate the time and cost of repairs
- Diagnose defects in all vehicles and equipment, including troubleshooting for minor or major repairs
- Determine mechanical repair needs
- Prepare and maintain all related records and reports
Work cooperatively with others - Communicate unsafe conditions or accidents and injuries promptly to the supervisor
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards
- Communicate and use interpersonal skills to interact with coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc., to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
- Operate city vehicles
- Valid Arizona Driver's License required.
- Required to work day or evening shifts as assigned.
- Work standby occasionally for holidays and callback shifts as needed.
- Must obtain air conditioning repair certification within 60 days of hire.
- Ability to obtain emissions testing certification within 6 months of hire.
- Must provide personal tools.
- Some assignments will also require a Class "A" or Class "B" Commercial Driver's license required at the time of application or upon hire, and passenger, tanker, and hazardous waste endorsements are required within 60 days of hire.
- This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing.
