Job SummaryCreates an environment where front line nurses and ancillary staff provide whole person care that is safe, complication-free, and optimizes functional independence for each patient. Maintains a highly-visible presence on the unit. Collaborates with staff, charge nurses, physicians, and other department leaders to ensure clinical operations are efficient and effective, achieving high patient/family/staff satisfaction. Supervises and directs the activities of various levels of nursing and ancillary personnel using professional judgment.
Schedules, leads, and coordinates the daily activities of a defined unit on an assigned shift. Assists leadership in accomplishing unit and organizational goals.
- Builds a high performing clinical work team by recruiting and retaining skilled staff; works with unit champions and clinical educator to meet educational needs. Conducts evaluations and provides coaching as appropriate. Monitors attendance and manages personnel matters with discretion and judgment.
- Sets and strives to achieve goals for patient safety, quality of care, and regulatory compliance. Develops strategies to improve patient/family/physician satisfaction and establishes standards of professional nursing practice.
- Conducts daily rounds with physicians and staff; coordinates care plans for patients and families; investigates and resolves care and operational issues; initiates conferences to optimize individualized care.
- Assesses unit personnel requirements daily; requests additional staff as needed; authorizes overtime when appropriate; completes monthly unit schedules with minimal staffing issues.
- Facilitates throughput including early discharge, bed management, admissions, transfers, and coordination with facility services to maintain safe and operational department and equipment.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Education and
Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or equivalent combination of education/related experience:
Required - Master's Degree:
Preferred - Five years' technical experience:
Preferred - One year's leadership experience:
Preferred - Two years' experience of acute care nursing in hospital setting:

- Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the state of practice:

- Manages unit personnel requirements, overtime authorization, and monthly scheduling with minimal staffing issues.
- Ensures efficient patient throughput, bed management, timely admissions/transfers, and equipment safety; conducts emergency preparedness reviews.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
