note: this recruitment for police services officer trainee is an unclassified, non-civil service, at-will full time position. While employed, the individual appointed will receive the same salary, benefits and leave accruals as comparable salaried classified employees.
job descriptionthis non-sworn trainee classification works under close supervision participating in training work leading to progressively responsible tasks in several areas of the police department, including, but not limited to parking/traffic enforcement and investigative services. The current vacancy for this position is in parking enforcement.

common responsibilities- customer service: provide exceptional customer service to all employees, customers, vendors and other city departments.
- ethics: model and practice with the highest standards of ethical conduct.
- performance: develop necessary skills from on-the-job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period. Work the necessary hours and times, including overtime as authorized for non-management staff, to complete goals, tasks, and objectives.
- safety: ensure the duties of the position are performed in a safe and efficient manner. Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
- teamwork: foster a teamwork environment. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- communications: give and receive direction in english. Communicate effectively in english, both orally and in writing.
- equipment: operate or use all position-related software, equipment and tools effectively and safely.
- cyber security: actively participate in maintaining a secure computing environment by adhering to and implementing city cybersecurity policies, procedures and best practices. Understand common cyber threats such as phishing and malware, and promptly report suspicious activities.

An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
education:high school diploma or equivalent.
experience:desirable: experience working in a public safety agency.
transportation:valid class c california driver’s license.
background investigationa comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to, financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigations will include livescan fingerprinting and a polygraph.

- parking / traffic: study, review, and enforce parking regulations by writing citations and arranging for vehicles to be impounded.
- learn to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations and ordinances.
- read and comprehend street maps.
- stand/sit for long periods of time.
- verify temporary no parking signs.
- learn to conduct training on parking enforcement to city personnel; demonstrate skill in public speaking and presentation.
- study and review solutions to parking related issues; learn new information and initiate improvements in technical and procedural areas.
- learns about traffic control services; assists with facilitating efficient traffic flow. Learn and follow traffic control procedures to ensure safety and appropriate traffic flow.
- learn about investigative procedures and techniques to address criminal activity.
- work with investigators and assist on complex tasks with confidential/sensitive material.
- learn how to investigate property damage only collisions and how to conduct basic searches for latent prints, dna evidence, and other evidence.
- follow established policies, procedures, regulations and ordinances.
- under supervision, may assist in controlling access to crime scenes and may conduct security checks in non-dangerous situations.
- may represent the police department at public or community functions/events and make presentations. Demonstrate skill in public speaking and presentation.
