this non-sworn trainee classification works under close supervision participating in training work leading to progressively responsible tasks in several areas of the police department, including, but not limited to parking/traffic enforcement and investigative services. The current vacancy for this position is in parking enforcement.

this position reports to police services supervisors or other police supervisors or managers, depending on assignment.

minimum required qualifications

education: high school diploma or equivalent.

experience (desirable): experience working in a public safety agency.

transportation: valid class c california driver’s license.

background investigation: a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted on all finalists, which will review and verify personal history including, but not limited to, financial responsibility, criminal history, drug use history, driving record, and verification of application materials. Significant issues or omissions in the above-stated areas may be grounds for disqualification. Background investigations will include livescan fingerprinting and a polygraph.

functional responsibilities – essential functions all assignments
  • maintain confidentiality of information when necessary and prudent.
  • learns to receive and answer requests for information from the public; receives complaints; obtains information requested by public.
  • learns how to take and writes routine reports; maintains records. Performs related clerical tasks.
  • may be required to testify in court.
  • learn penal, vehicle and other codes.
  • learn the standing policies and procedures pertaining to police operations.
parking / traffic enforcement assignment
  • studies, reviews, and enforces parking regulations by writing citations and arranges for vehicles to be impounded.
  • learn to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulations and ordinances.
  • read and comprehend street maps.
  • stand/sit for long periods of time.
  • verifies temporary no parking signs.
  • learn to conduct training on parking enforcement to city personnel. Demonstrate skill in public speaking and presentation.
  • studies and reviews solutions to parking related issues. Learn new information and initiate improvements in technical and procedural areas.
