Job Summary:
Responsible for conducting criminal investigations and assisting with the administration of the Police Department.
EssentialJob Duties /Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions may include the following. Must possess required knowledge skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Investigates crimes that have already occurred by questioning witnesses, victims and suspects to determine facts; directing activities at the crime scene, gathering and preserving evidence, interfacing with complainant or victim and assisting in the preparation of cases for court.
- Provides enforcement, detection and prevention under the laws of City, State, and United States.
- Develops crime scene investigation responses; testifies in legal proceedings; mediates complaints concerning police services.
- Reviews reports and ensures they comply with legal and departmental procedures; inspects equipment for proper use and care.
- Participates in programs to train citizens, students and businesses in crime prevention.
- Makes annual budget recommendations; tracks and reports monthly variances to plan.
- Reviews and revises Police Development policies and procedures; presents department policies and activities to officials of public and private agencies and the public to explain Police Department programs and actions.
- Bachelor's Degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
- Minimum of two years of experience a being assigned as police detective, criminal investigator, or equivalent role.
- Experience conducting criminal investigations after initial reports are taken. Which includes but not limited to evidence collection, interviewing, case documentation and management.
- Strong report writing skills and experience preparing cases for prosecution.
- Comprehensive abilities in problem solving, conflict management and customer relations techniques
- Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Suite including Excel, Word, and Power Point
- Ability to develop and maintain a positive working relationship with staff, fellow employees, elected officials, supervisors, citizens, business and community groups
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information and to comply with all record retention laws
- Proficient skills to communicate clearly and concisely in English, both orally and in writing
- Proficient skills to load, unload, aim and fire approved weapons from a variety of body positions, under conditions of stress that justify the use of deadly force and at levels of proficiency prescribed in statutory
- Proficient understanding of all City safety rules and operating procedures
- Ability to maintain proficiency and knowledge of current and upcoming or new regulations/legislation within areas of responsibility
Certifications:
- Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment
- Intermediate certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE)
- Must have no felony convictions
- Must have no convictions of Class A or Class B misdemeanors within the last five years
- Must not be on probation for any criminal offense above the grade of a Class C misdemeanor
- Must not have convictions for any family violence offense
- Must not have convictions for DWI in the past ten (10) years
- Cannot be on suspension for a breath test refusal
- Must not have not been prohibited by state or federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition
- Must not have not been prohibited by state or federal law from operating a motor vehicle within the past twenty four (24) months
- Must not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense
- Must not have convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude
