Position: Police Recruit / Police Officer

Performs police patrol, investigation, traffic regulation, and related law enforcement activities. Grade 18

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs various tasks involving patrol methods, crime and accident investigations, community relations, courtroom testimony and procedures, booking, fingerprinting, report preparation and maintain physical fitness.
  • Learns use of various firearms and first aid methods.
  • Works rotating shifts.
  • Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance.
  • Maintains availability by radio or telephone for consultation on major emergencies or precedent.
  • Complies with Local, State, and Federal laws as applicable to municipal law enforcement.
  • Patrols City streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law, control vehicular traffic, prevent or detect and investigate misconduct involving misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations, and to otherwise serve and protect.
  • Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbances, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action.
  • Interviews suspects, witnesses, and drivers. Preservation of evidence. Arrest violators as appropriate. Investigates and renders assistance at traffic accidents. Ensures safety at accident scenes. Mobilizes fire department, emergency medical units, ambulance, mental health professionals and other law enforcement, as necessary.
  • Complete accident reports by assuring critical information is documented, photographs are taken, measurements, records, and diagram complete, as necessary.
  • Conducts follow-up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift. Locates and questions any victim, witness or suspects involved in an incident. Develops leads and tips. Searches scene of crimes as allowed by law. Writes search warrants when probable cause exists to search crime scenes. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders when appropriate. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings as required.
  • Prepares a variety of written reports and records including but are not limited to, officer daily briefing log, crime investigation reports, alcohol and narcotic drug possession and influence reports, vehicle impoundment and inventory form, traffic hazard report, license re-examination, medical examiners report, etc.
  • Undertakes community-oriented policing. Provide assistance to citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention methods, traffic safety, etc.
  • Participates in investigating criminal law violations occurring within the City limits, obtaining evidence, and compiling information regarding these crimes, preparing cases for filing of charges with the County Attorney’s Office, testifying in court, and related activities.
  • Conducts patrol activities including directing traffic, investigation of reported or observed violations of law, and conducting patrol activities.
  • Coordinated activities with other officers or other law enforcement agencies as needed, exchanges information with other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the department legal advisors, Gila County Attorney Office, City Attorney, regarding cases, policies, and procedures, as needed and assigned.
  • Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information concerning department activities.
Peripheral Duties
  • Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities.
  • Maintains contact with general public, court officials, and other City officials in the performance of police operating activities.
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by a two-year community college degree or vocational school training in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or a related field.
