The purpose of this position is to perform semi‑skilled work in the construction, repair and maintenance of roads, right‑of‑ways, auxiliary structures, and secondary roads; operate various types of construction equipment in accordance with safety regulations and procedures.

Responsibilities include operating road construction and maintenance equipment such as front‑end loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, motor graders, paving machines, street sweepers, transfer trucks, and compactors. The operator also handles landfill equipment including water trucks for dust control, compactor, scraper, bulldozer, loader for piling solid waste and maintains lifts as required. Compliance with safety and environmental regulations for solid waste disposal is ensured.

Typical tasks are grading roads, paving, replacing asphalt, patching and repairing roads, cleaning roadways, and sweeping streets. Maintenance of ditches and culverts, removal of debris, installation of culverts and ensuring efficient water flow are also part of the role. Operations at landfill involve moving dirt, planning land and slope grades for safe equipment operation, building refuse lifts, coordinating with the Department of Corrections inmate work detail, and performing manual labor assignments such as fire control, hazardous materials cleanup, guardrail and foliage maintenance, debris removal, brush cutting, and tree removal impacting roadways.

Other duties include assisting landfill customers to unload refuse safely, separating recyclable products, flagging traffic, placing barricades and cones, conducting landfill liner leakage testing, waste oil barrel cleaning, freon removal, battery storage, waste tire program, and performing emergency road services related to fires, floods, roadway inspections, snow removal, flood damage repair, rockslides, and fires. The operator also hauls materials, transports vehicles and equipment to work sites, inspects, cleans and performs routine operational checks on trucks and heavy equipment, and reports repairs.
