Position: Escape Room events specialist (Freelance)

Lost in the Past:
Develop and create a new Escape Room programme to commercialise and grow the Museum of Gloucester’s offer.

The Museum of Gloucester is seeking to partner with an experienced events specialist(s) to develop and create an all-new Escape Room experience, designed to attract and inspire new audiences. This piece of work is the first step in the development of an updated commercial offer for the Museum across several strands of activity. The appointed specialist will develop a new Escape Room programme that combines immersive storytelling, object-based clues, and puzzles inspired by the city’s heritage.

This experienced external specialist will be commissioned to design and deliver a professionally produced experience within the museum’s galleries, introducing a new revenue-generating strand as part of the public programme.

Project scope
  • Storyline and narrative design rooted in Gloucester’s heritage and collections
  • Puzzle creation using object-based interpretation
  • Spatial and technical design for an immersive gallery-based experience
  • Audience testing and refinement
  • Delivery of a fully operational Escape Room experience
  • Staff training to ensure long-term sustainability and in-house delivery
Audience impact

The project will broaden access and engagement, attracting:

  • Young people and adults aged 16–35 who do not regularly visit museums
  • Families and intergenerational groups
  • Local residents and community organisations
  • Schools and colleges
Practical outputs
  • Two-three new Escape Room ‘stories’ with full scripts
  • Bespoke, durable set pieces, props, costumes and interactive elements
  • AV and technical equipment compatible with existing infrastructure if required
  • Installation materials, fixings, signage, and health and safety provisions
  • Staff training materials and operational manuals
  • Audience-facing full instructions

We intend for this work to be complete by 22 January 2027 at the latest.
