Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine

The closing date is 16 February 2026

Do you choose Emergency Medicine for interesting pathology, to treat the full array of patients and clinical presentations? Do you value working with a great team, living in a beautiful area with nationally excelling schools and internationally renowned sporting and cultural events? Come to Gloucestershire.

Candidates are invited to apply for a Fixed-term maternity cover Emergency Medicine Consultant post. The successful applicant will join the team of 22 ED consultants delivering care across our 2 EDs at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. We see 145,000 ED attendances a year, 25% of which are children. We handle the highest number of major trauma cases of all Major Trauma Units in the South West region.

A busy DGH with a dedicated and innovative EM consultant team, we perform within the top 40/121 trusts in England for 4‑hour performance. £39 million was invested in a newly extended and refurbished Emergency Department and Acute Medical Unit, completed in January 2024, providing excellent facilities.

The departments have segregated paediatric areas, are well supported by SDECs for medical and surgical specialties, and host co‑located primary care services, 24/7 on‑site PPCI and interventional radiology at GRH.

The team delivers consultant‑led care from 8 am until midnight with non‑resident on‑call overnight, working 1:6 weekends via an annualised and self‑rostered job plan. A strategy for reduced antisocial hours for our senior workforce is in place.

Main duties of the job

The post attracts 8 PAs. The Medical Local Negotiating Committee (LNC) has agreed on behalf of the medical staff body within the Trust a standard allocation of 1.5 SPAs for all new appointments. Core duties are included in the present allocation of 1.5 SPAs.

On‑call supplement will be 3% (Category

A) of a basic 10 PA salary. The department provides 16 hours of consultant cover: 08:00‑midnight in Gloucester and 08:00‑22:00 in Cheltenham. Consultants work a self‑rostered annualised job plan which optimises clinical cover, and provides flexibility for work/life balance and other interests outside the department. This process also allows for a fixed day off per week.

Weekday on‑calls will be divided amongst the consultants. The job plan may vary in response to other consultants' leave and unplanned increases in work. The consultant will be expected to monitor their hours to ensure that the workload averages out to the proposed job plan.

In line with the terms and conditions, the final job plan is subject to the agreement of the Trust through the Specialty Director and the appointee. Consultants provide cover for their colleagues for emergency work whenever they are away. The maximum number of consultants away at any one time is always subject to the provision of an adequate service for patients.
