This is a full-time Trust Clinical Fellow post to join the clinical Haematology department at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. The department has an excellent track record of supporting doctors to develop their career and achieve training posts.
The post will be based at the Regional Cancer Centre at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Gloucester Royal Hospital (GRH) on a rotational basis. It joins an established team of 9 Consultants providing a full range of diagnostic and clinical haematology services to a population of approximately 650,000. Services include clinical (attending) inpatient duties to BCSH Level 3 care at CGH, day care services at GRH, and outpatient and laboratory facilities at both sites.
The Consultant team is supported by 3-4 Specialty Trainees (St3+), 3 Specialty Doctors, 1 ST1/2, 1 FY1, 1 Transfusion Practitioner, 1 ANP, 7 Specialist Nurses and 3 non-medical prescribers. Resident doctors also support the inpatient wards on a rotational basis.
We are looking to appoint a suitable medical physician to support Haematology at Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucester Royal Hospital, together with teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students. The post primarily involves outpatient work, reviewing patients during and post treatment, and training in chemotherapy assessment and prescribing in outpatient clinics and on the day unit at GRH.
The post also involves ward work, covering two dedicated oncology and haematology wards (40 beds) and the Acute Haematology and Oncology Unit, and managing referrals from other departments.
This post is ideally suited to a candidate looking for experience before seeking a haematology training post. The candidate will:
- Work closely with colleagues to provide cover across the day unit, outpatient, and ward to deliver high quality patient care
- Gain experience in the management of common malignancies, including chemotherapy assessment
- Provide effective middle grade leadership to staff on the ward, day unit and outpatient clinics
- Lead, in conjunction with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors
- Support the delivery of high quality care to patients presenting with haematological disorders
- Examine and treat both in-patients and out-patients referred to the Department
- Support junior medical and nursing staff in clinical decision making
- Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme
- Be fully compliant with Trust mandatory training requirements
- Actively participate in the departmental education programme
- Show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility and work within the framework of team decisions
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
- Completion of F1/F2 and evidence of achievement of F1/F2 competencies at the time of application or by the time of appointment.
- MRCP exam part 1.
- Up-to-date knowledge and fit to practice safely.
- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, demonstrated through undergraduate training in English or IELTS scores equivalent to those required for MMC specialty training programmes.
- Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
- Relevant medical clinical knowledge and the capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge.
- Clinical judgement: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk, knowing when to seek help and prioritising clinical need.
- Practical skills: aptitude for required practical skills.
- Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings.
- Previous experience of working in Haematology.
- Effective communication skills with clarity in written and spoken communication and adaptability of language.
- Ability to work under stress, flexibility and ability.
- Team working: demonstrated experience working in a team and valuing input of other professionals.
- Willingness to engage fully in appraisal, self‑awareness and willingness to learn from feedback.
