We are seeking a committed, patient and resilient 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs within our specialist SEMH school in Gloucester.
The successful candidate will work closely with an individual pupil, providing personalised academic, emotional and behavioural support to help them engage positively with learning and school life. This role requires the ability to build strong, trusting relationships while maintaining clear boundaries and high expectations.
Working alongside teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals, you will play a vital role in helping the pupil overcome barriers to learning, develop self-confidence and achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities- Provide dedicated 1:1 support to a pupil with SEMH needs throughout the school day.
- Assist the pupil in accessing learning activities and engaging positively within the classroom environment.
- Support the implementation of individual education plans, behaviour support plans and intervention strategies.
- Build a positive and consistent relationship with the pupil to promote trust, engagement and emotional wellbeing.
- Use de-escalation and behaviour management strategies to support the pupil during periods of dysregulation or emotional distress.
- Encourage the development of social skills, emotional resilience and independence.
- Work closely with teaching staff to adapt learning activities and resources to meet the pupil's individual needs.
- Monitor and record progress, behaviour, attendance and wellbeing, providing feedback to relevant staff.
- Support the pupil during transitions, break times, educational visits and enrichment activities.
- Promote positive behaviour and reinforce the school's values and expectations.
- Liaise effectively with teachers, parents/carers and external agencies where appropriate.
- Adhere to all safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies and procedures.
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people in an educational, care, youth work or support setting.
- Understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and the impact these can have on learning and behaviour.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient and professional in challenging situations.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
