Job overview

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant to join Five Acres High School and become an integral member of the support team. Main responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the school’s SENDCO work alongside members of the Learning Support Team;
  • Support students with learning, physical, medical, emotional and behavioural difficulties to access the curriculum and develop appropriate classroom behaviour;
  • Promote and contribute to the academy ethos and values;
  • Support teachers in facilitating and encouraging learning, enabling students to achieve high standards and become independent learners;
  • Contribute to the evaluation of the school’s SEND and Inclusion Policies through discussions with relevant staff;
  • Attend in‑service training provided by the school or local authority;
  • Attend school team meetings, meetings with external agencies and prepare reports for these meetings;
  • Provide in‑class support for identified individual students or small groups (e.g. 4‑5 students), including specialist subject support as appropriate;
  • Assist in the management of the whole class under the direction of the class teacher through modelling of effective behaviour management techniques;
  • Develop and lead small‑group work for identified students under the direction of the class teacher or SENDCO, and contribute to the appropriate paperwork;
  • Assist in the production of teaching and learning materials, including differentiation;
  • Provide personal care support for students experiencing physical or medical difficulties (following training);
  • Provide before and after school support for identified students as required;
  • Provide regular feedback to the class teacher and the SENDCO or relevant line manager;
  • Use appropriate systems for recording the progress of students with behavioural and learning difficulties;
  • Provide data and information to inform annual and transition review paperwork, PSPs, student profile documentation and academic reporting;
  • Undertake assessment of students and provide data to relevant staff for analysis;
  • Support students undertaking tests/exams to enable full use of their access arrangements;
  • Liaise with parents/carers and professionals (e.g. educational psychologists) as required;
  • Liaise with other teams across the school to ensure all student needs are met;
  • Promote student independence by using a variety of reward strategies;
  • Support with first aid responsibilities.
What you will need
  • A good relevant education to GCSE level or equivalent;
  • Further qualifications or training relevant to the role such as an NVQ level 2 or above TA qualification;
  • Previous experience working with neuro‑diverse students;
  • Previous experience in an educational setting with children;
  • Experience working within a secondary or educational setting;
  • Experience using information technology to support students in the classroom;
  • Experience supporting SEN students in a mainstream classroom environment;
  • Knowledge of strategies to recognise and reward efforts and achievements, and encouragement of self‑reliance and independence;
  • Knowledge of SEND and behaviour management strategies;
  • Good interpersonal skills with adults and children;
  • Dependable, able to follow instructions and respond to management directions;
  • Good working ICT knowledge;
  • Willingness to extend skills through appropriate training;
  • A passion and desire to drive things forward;
  • Commitment to working within the school’s safeguarding policy and procedures;
  • High levels of professional integrity, energy and enthusiasm;
  • Flexibility to undertake any role within the department;
  • Commitment to high standards and expectations;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changes.
