My client is an innovative construction scale up on an exciting growth trajectory, and they’re looking for a Senior Bookkeeper to help shape and strengthen their finance function.
This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys improving workflows and controls, and wants real influence in a growing business.
What You’ll Do
Working closely with the Head of Commercial and Project Accountants, you’ll ensure that all financial data is accurate, timely, and well-controlled across operational and project-based activities.
Key responsibilities include:
Core Finance & Bookkeeping
* Maintain accurate accounts, including sales and purchase ledgers, bank reconciliations, and the general ledger
* Manage supplier invoices from receipt to payment
* Prepare VAT returns and ensure correct treatment
* Support month-end processes, including accruals, prepayments, and balance sheet reconciliations
Cashflow & Payments
* Prepare and manage supplier payment runs
* Monitor short-term cashflow and assist with forecasting
* Maintain control over aged creditors and resolve supplier queries
Process & Controls Improvement
* Implement and enforce procure-to-pay processes with clear approvals and audit trails
* Improve invoice accuracy, financial workflows, and reporting
* Support finance automation and digital efficiency initiatives
* Document and embed best practice finance procedures
Systems & Reporting
* Own and maintain Xero (or equivalent cloud accounting system) integrity
* Collaborate with Project Accountants to capture accurate project costs
* Support management reporting and audit-ready record keeping
Team & Business Support
* Act as the key finance contact for non-finance colleagues
* Potentially support or supervise a Finance Administrator as the team grows
* Provide a dependable and trusted finance presence across the business
Essential skills and experience:
* Xero or equivalent cloud accounting software
* Proven experience as a Senior Bookkeeper or similar in an SME environment
* Strong understanding of UK accounting practices and VAT
* Highly organised, with great attention to detail and time-management skills
* Confident working independently and taking ownership
Desirable:
* AAT qualified or qualified by experience
* Experience in construction, engineering, utilities, or project-based industries
* Track record of improving finance processes in growing organisations
* Exposure to project accounting or cost tracking
If you’re looking for a role where you can make a real impact, streamline finance processes, and grow alongside an ambitious construction scale-up, we’d love to hear from you
